myself, so I'm not familiar with all aspects of it,
but I believe that itext handles rtf to pdf conversion.
If that is so, you could look at OpenOffice as a way to convert .doc to .rtf
Take a look at www.openoffice.org, in particular, look at the OpenOffice
api.
