Hi everyone, I'm glad to announce the availability of a Pre Release version of the Blackdown 1.3.1 Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for the XScale architecture. This release is provided for evaluation and testing purposes, so it may still contain some rough edges. We've been testing the JRE on a PXA255 processor, and we got outstanding performance gains, particularly for Java graphical applications.
Please don't hesitate to send me your results if you give it a try, good or bad :) [Download] The 1.3.1 XScale JRE is available on the following FTP site: ftp://yrls.net/pub/blackdown/ Note: this is my own personal FTP server in Montreal, so please be patient if the service gets a bit slow. It is currently the only server containing the JRE. [Build environment] For the record, this JRE was built with the Oerlikon DevKit, previously announced on the arm-linux mailing list (and still available on ftp://ftp.arm.linux.org.uk/pub/linux/arm/toolchain/ ). This cross toolchain contains the following components: -gcc 3.2.1 -glibc 2.3.1 -Binutils 2.13.90.0.16 [What is the XScale processor?] The Intel Xscale micro-architecture is Intel's implementation of the ARMV5 instruction set. This processor is usually aimed at applications operating in the 200-400MHz range. Its low power consumption makes its particularly interesting for mobile embedded devices such as PDA's and wearable computers (more info available on http://developer.intel.com/design/intelxscale/ixm.htm) [What's next?] Java Blackdown 1.4.1 is the next logical step. This porting effort aims both at an arm and xscale port of the jvm. The 1.4.1 port is not a trivial one, so please contact me if your organization would like to support and accelerate the development process. I'm also open to suggestions and ideas. [Acknowledgments] Many thanks to Nicolas Dufort and the IC4U team at Oerlikon-Contraves Inc. in Montreal for their help. Thanks also to all Blackdown developers for all the great work in the last few years, and for letting me become part of the team :) Cheers, -Dominic -- Dominic Duval SOLIDD Technologies, http://www.dd.qc.ca Cell: 514-581-7975, ICQ: 4251006 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
