The classes are very useful for people who need to generate read-only, platform independent documents containing text and tables. These documents follow the Portable Document Format (PDF) standard version 1.2. They can be used instead of HTML pages to publish the contents of a database on the internet. They have the advantage of being completely browser independent (*). When printed out on paper HTML pages are rendered differently by different browsers; PDF documents are always printed the same way. (*) The client will always need the Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin in order to view the documents. You can download the source code and API from ftp://ftp.lowagie.com/iText/.
