We have used "Wrapper" (http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org) at times to start Java servers as a Windows service. Just wondering if there was any newer best practice out there? A pity its not an executable shipped with the standard Java distribution. Makes it that bit easier getting Java apps

Which is one good reason not to use Java. You could use the super simple GraphViz, it needs your input dataset transformed as text file and will output an image (or postscript). While typically a nightmare to inter-operate with native stuff from Java, this one is simple to call through Runtime.get

I find upgrading mostly works, although I would not start mixing alpha's and beta's. Also, 64bit stuff seems to be a bit more brittle than 32bit stuff. The new software center is pretty cool, will be nice when Synaptic is completely rolled into this. Also nice that when adding PPA's, you do not ne

Been running the RC for about a week (got a new SSD, could not wait for the final). Updated all packages today which gave me a final release. I would recommend a clean install over upgrade from Jaunty due to the new GRUB2 boot-loader and also the new default feature of running separate X sessions
