Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I have moderate skills but having been surfing the web for years. I've had one local web site (a city one) that I just could never get passed the home page. Never knew precisely what the problem was, just that I couldn't access it. Anyway I used this site and was able to get all the links and in seconds! Again the problem with this particular site was not so much that links beyond the home page weren't accessible but that the home page itself was. So now I can get through the front door so to speak. Now I wonder were this wonderful resource came from and why don't cities and others use it as a development tool? Anyway again many, many many thanks! This is very exciting for a person who is not a super techee but one who is just a user and one who wishes to have maximine access to information! It is great! [JAWS-Users] Copying songs from a CD
Good Morning! I'm probably missing the obvious, but I'll take a deep breath and ask what may be the most basic question of the year. I tried to copy selected songs from one of my CDs last night, and could not seem to understand the process. This whole music adventure is new to me, so forgive my ignorance. I have a vast collection of music, and my current project is to compile only the songs I really enjoy hearing, and then burning them to CD. Could someone please explain the procedure, and/or tell me what to read to understand how to rip a song or two from a CD and place it into a folder for future use? I do have Roxio Easy CD Creator, and if Victor would be kind to this damsel in distress, maybe he could give me an outline of the steps necessary to burn a CD of MP3s. I've arranged transportation to purchase blank CDs today, so as soon as I know what I'm doing, I'll rev up my PC and start managing my music. Thanks for any and all help in advance. Hi Shirley, I am far from someone who knows it all, however, I can try my best to help you, as I am very familiar with Roxio Easy CD Creator. I should warn you, that 5 is the only version of Roxio that I have been able to understand and use successfully. It's pretty easy, and doesn't take much time to use. There is also a program available on David's Jaws-Users website called CDX or something like that. I can't say for sure, as I have not used the program, but apparently, it's very easy to use with Jaws and will rip anything for you. If you don't want to learn a new piece of software, I can write a bit of how to do it for you a bit later on today and post it to the list. [JAWS-Users] Re: Changing Sythesisers
Here are the instructions I've saved for quite a number of years and now of course since it has been brought to my attention I will post them up on the site. I admit at first thinking that it was sort of silly but then realized they are very good for certain applications, directions follow. David Ferrin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Compatibility: JFW3.3X or higher. It is as simple as adding a line in the AutoStartEvent, and the AutoFinishEvent functions. If you recall, when these functions are present within a script file, they get called when the associated application gets started, and when it is exited, respectively. If they aren't in the script file, it is very easy to add them yourself. With that in mind, we'll gear these instructions as if you found no AutoStartEvent or AutoFinishEvent functions in your script file; if they are there, then you can just focus on the instructions for adding the two SetSynth() statements. To get the correct synthesizer KeyName, take a look at your JFW.INI file with NotePad, or some other editor. That file is found in the folder JFW is installed in. 1) While in the application you want to associate the synthesizer switch with, hit Insert+0 to launch the Script Manager with that application's script file loaded for editing. if there is no script file for this program, the Script Manager will create a blank one. 2) To see if you already have an AutoStartEvent function, hit Control+L to bring up the list of scripts/functions in the current script file. It is sorted by name, so the A should be the first scripts you come to in this list. If you have an AutoStartEvent, highlight it and whack Enter. This will place you on that script's header line. Hit End and then Enter to place yourself on a blank line underneath that header line. 3) If you don't have an AutoStartEvent, hit Escape and we'll create one. a) Hit F2 to get to the first script in this file, (if there are any). b) If you land on that script, hit the UpArrow once to get on the line above that script. If there are no scripts, then you can just start with the next step. c) Type in, or cut and paste, the following lines: (Note: if you already had an AutoStartEvent, then just add the following SetSynth line below.) function AutoStartEvent() SetSynth(lt) ;Sets DoubleTalk-LT/LiteTalk as synthesizer. EndFunction This tells JFW that whenever this program is launched, the user wants their DoubleTalk-LT, or their LiteTalk, to be used as their synthesizer. ***Important: if you don't have the external synthesizer turned on at this point, you'll probably hang the system, requiring a reboot. This is because you'll be trying to access a serial device that, (as far as the system is concerned), isn't there. This is not a bug in either the synthesizer or screen reader, but rather a User Error--and those are the easiest errors to fix!) 4) Hit Control+S to compile what we have so far. If successful, go to the next step. 5) Hit Control+L again to locate the AutoFinishEvent. If you have one, highlight it and hit Enter, then arrow down to a line underneath the variable declarations and hit End, then Enter to create a blank line. 6) If you don't have one, hit Escape to exit the script list and hit Control+End to reach the bottom of the file. Hit Enter a couple of times to give yourself some room. 7) Type in, or cut and paste, the following: function AutoFinishEvent() SetSynth(dtsoft) ;Sets synthesizer back to Access32 EndFunction 8) Compile with Control+S. Hit Alt+F4 to exit the Script editor and see what response you get when loading and unloading this application! * Now here's an example of what I used in the past to switch quickly from Eloquence and my DEC talk express *** void function AutoStartEvent() SetSynth(dte) EndFunction void function AutoFinishEvent() SetSynth(eloq) EndFunction - Original Message - From: KERRYANN IFILL [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2007 9:52 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Changing Sythesisers Hi David, I'm using eloquence and realspeak synthesisers. [JAWS-Users] Re: Copying songs from a CD
Hi Shirley, Well, I use CDEX, but I would imagine that the procedure would be similar in any such program. When you place a CD in the drive, you are presented with a list view of the tracks. You simply use regular Windows commands to select the tracks uyou want to rip. If you want to rip the whole CD hit CONTROL-A to select all of the songs, then hit the command to rip, which in CDEX is F9. If you want to rip one track, just arrow down to it and hit the command to rip. If you want to rip noncontiguous tracks, while holding down the CONTROL key, hit the down arrow, and hit the space bar to select only the tracks you want to rip, then after you have selected all of the trakcs, hit the command to rip. Sorry but I don't think those terms are included in that particular file. Basically a wave file is in an uncompressed format for example CD quality. Where as an MP3 file is in a compressed format essentially with the frequencies that are supposed to be out of the range that humans can hear stripped away. Most of the time you can't tell one from the other but on occasion what is called an artifact will pop up in an MP3 file. That simply means for example a symbol sound might be not quite right when you're listening to that particular song. It may have a waver to it or some other such anomaly. [JAWS-Users] Re: Copying songs from a CD
Rip is the fancy term assigned to the procedure of simply copying songs from a CD to your hard drive. I remember some years ago the wife of a friend of mine was telling me how she flipped out on her nephew because he showed up at their house one day and said Uncle Tony I want to burn a CD. She proceeded to tell him off and that he wasn't burning anything in their house at all. So I explained to her like I just did for you that burning is the term used to put information on a CD, which is in fact what you are doing by using a laser beam. [JAWS-Users] Re: Customizing Jaws for more than one user on a computer, Jaws 7
Hi Carla, If you're using a system with Windows xp, simply log on using your husband's account, go in to the jaws window and select the Options menu. You'll find all the changes you need to make are located under the voices item of that menu. Once you log off the system and log back on under your own or any account not his own, the jfw settings will be as they were originally. Hope this helps. How can I go about customizing settings for my husband on our computer, and be able to save those settings? He wants to customize the voice to be slower, and more things to be read as he is just learning the computer, etc. This way he'll be able to have access to his own email, and msn without having to depend on me to get him started. I'm not sure where, if this is in the help or training documentation. If anyone knows how to do this, or where I can read about it in the help files, could someone let me know? [JAWS-Users] Re: Copying songs from a CD
Hi, Andy. I'm thinking of ripping songs from oldies CD's with windows media player. What is the command for ripping songs with windows media player? Thanks in advance. Rosemarie - Original Message - From: Baracco, Andrew W [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2007 10:09 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Copying songs from a CD Hi Shirley, Well, I use CDEX, but I would imagine that the procedure would be similar in any such program. It's so nice to have this list, so self-taught computer users can ask questions and receive responses from those of you that have all the answers, and are kind enough to share what is stored within your knowledgeable brain cells. [JAWS-Users] Accessable FTP Program with Jaws and free
Hey everyone, Here I am again asking another question. I'm trying to find an accessable FTP program to use with Jaws 7 and be able to make my computer into a server? I've been told about a program called Serve You, but not sure how to set it up. Does anyone know of any programs, and that are free? Hope this made sense. [JAWS-Users] Re: Copying songs from a CD
Hi Rosemarie, I would advise you not to use Windows Media Player, as they are very limited in what you can do with those files. I would recommend you download CDX and use that to extract the music from the files, then save it in MP3 format. In order to get CD or near CD quality, you should extract them into 128 to 160 kbps and 44100 hertz. If you want to plunk down some money, I would advise you get one of the programs like Goldwave, Sound forge, or even Roxio Easy CD Creator and use those programs. I think Nero also lets you extract music from CD's, but I can't be sure. Again, I cannot stress enough that you should not use Windows Media Player to extract music from CD;'s, Windows Media Player automatically creates burn rights on the music that is extracted, and only allows you to play them on the computer that you extracted the files from, or create up to three back-up copies of the CD. This has to do with the whole copyright laws and stuff like that. If things have changed since the last time I used Windows Media Player to extract files from a CD, then I whole heartedly apologize for the misinformation, but considering what Microsoft has done with Windows Vista, I doubt that things have changed that much. [JAWS-Users] The Microsoft word ghost
Hi Folks, I am using MS-Word XP, Jaws 8.current and Windows home addition. Recently Word has taken it upon itself to change font points sizes and center text without me even asking. [JAWS-Users] Thanks for the information
Good Evening, Before I call it a day, I want to thank those of you who responded to my request for help with the process of ripping and burning a CD. I got a bit sidetracked this afternoon, and have not had time to experiment. I had downloaded but not installed cdex170beta2, but based on David's comments, I will check on the version he mentioned. The Roxio program that is on my system just happens to be 5, so that could be a good thing. Again, thanks for the information and recommendations. As soon as time allows, I will report back, either to declare my triumphant success, or ask for further assistance. My bet is that you are or have been working with a document with some sort of style which has been saved and become part of the default template. Word seems to do this all the time to people.
