Ah! I haven't made any changes, so that must be the answer. I was faked out
by the fact that a file with that name appeared to be opening, but then when
I didn't make any changes, nothing was getting saved.

I am running Jaws 8.0.1177 and when I launch the Configuration Manager for
Internet Explorer the file name showing on the title bar is "Internet
Explorer.jcf". When I use the Explore Settings option for Jaws 8 though, I
find no such file listed in the enu folder. Anyone got any ideas?

Since there were people who wanted to know, aside from me how to fix the
problem I was having, I thought I would post the fix here, for the benefit
of those who weren't able to figure it out themselves before I could.
 
My thanks to Steve, who's suggestion actually caused me to have more
problems than I had previous to my other dilemma.
 
Basically, what had happened was that I took Steve's suggestion, and
installed Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator 6 Platinum, which caused Roxio Easy CD
Creator 5 to be uninstalled before it could install version 6.
 
Well, doing that caused a maelstrom of problems, least of which was my CD
burner not reading the files on any CD's I inserted into my CD-RW drive, and
before anyone thinks to ask, these were original commercial disks I stuck in
there, not burnt ones or previously burnt ones.  Grin.
 
Anyway, I am not saying that this was Steve's fault, or the fault of his
suggestion, I figure I didn't do the install right, and the updates weren't
installed properly.  Suffice it to say, I had to do a system restore, in
order to fix the reading capabilities of my CD-RW drive.
 
Needless to say, I was forced to re-install Creator 5 and go with that.
 
Anyway, onto the fix...
 
So, I knew there must be a problem with the view settings because I could
see the list view of items, I just couldn't see the tree view of files, so I
figured there must be something wrong that I just wasn't catching.
 
Quite frankly, I don't know how I could have missed it.
 
First and foremost, one should highlight the properties of the start menu
icon, or desktop icon, depending on where you activate creator 5 from.
 
Actually, if you activate Creator 5 from the desktop icon that was
originally put there when you installed the program, than most likely, you
have launched the Easy CD Creator 5 Application Launcher, which is
completely graphic and hard to work with, so I would suggest deleting that
icon, and going into your start menu, pressing P for Programs, then R until
you get to Roxio, then enter to land on Applications, then arrow down to
Easy CD Creator 5 and press the applications key.  You may not hear Jaws
read that the applications menu has activated, but just arrow down and
you'll find that it has activated.  At this point, arrow down to Send To
sub-menu, then arrow down to Desktop, Create Shortcut.
 
Go to your Desktop, by pressing control+M or the alt+tab combination, and
press the letter E to highlight the Easy CD Creator 5 icon.
 
Press the applications key, and arrow up to properties.
 
In the shortcut properties dialog box, tab to the shortcut key, if desired,
and enter it, then tab once more to the run combo box, and arrow down to
maximized, then tab to apply, then shift+tab back to ok.  The decision of
creating a shortcut key is completely yours, and is not necessary to fix the
problem, just to let you all know.
 
Now that you've done the initial set-up, highlight the desktop icon and
press enter.
 
Now that you have the Easy CD Creator 5 program open, press the alt+V for
the view menu, and make sure the following is checked.  If you find it is
not checked, press enter on it to check it.
 
The following should be checked:
 
Show Explorer Bar.
 
And;
 
List.
 
If you check these two items, you'll get all the accessibility you want.
You can then press insert+H for available hotkeys.
 
Hope this helps, and again, I thank Steve for his suggestion, and say that
if it weren't for him, I would have never been driven to find the answer on
my own.

Go to the run command and type %tmp% and press enter. This will put you in
an explorer window with a list of non-crucial temporary files, which you can
delete. If you've closed all programs before running this command, you
should be able to use control+A to highlight them all, and then just press
shift+delete to delete them from your computer, bypassing the recycle bin.

around in various applications.  But again, unless you know what you are
deleting, I don't advise it.
The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your
profile name)\local settings\temporary Internet files.  This is where your
temp files and cookies are stored.  Most of these files provide faster
loading of visited web pages.  I don't see that it affects the performance
of your PC by removing them.

You can perform 3 of the tasks mentioned.
1. Check Disk
Go to run and type in,
chkdsk /f (drive letter): and press enter.  Note the colon after the drive
letter.  Unlike running a check disk on your C drive, you won't need to
reboot for this to perform.
 
2. Scan Disk
Per form the scan disk just as you would on the C drive, but of course
highlighting the drive you want to scan as opposed to the C drive.  Then
just follow the instructions as you would for the C drive.  Again, you won't
have to reboot for this to run.
 
3. Defrag
Perform as you would for the C drive but again, highlight the drive you want
to defrag.
 
One more step that I didn't include in those instructions is cleaning up the
temp files.
This should be performed on the C drive.
Close all applications with the exception of Jaws.

[JAWS-Users] Anybody using Google toolbar successfully?

Unlike Patricia, I was unable to find the checkbox to avoid installing the
Google toolbar, so I've got it now.  Before I remove it, is anyone on the
list able to use it successfully?  Everything I've seen so far has led me to
believe it's more trouble than it's worth, but I just thought I'd check to
see if there are any power-users who have it and like it.

There's no trouble with what you're doing, but you coould 
simply go to the first cell   in the area you wish to copy 
to and simply paste and it will cover a comparable region.

In looking at the help topic for Excel keystrokes last night, I saw one for
selecting an entire region.  Don't remember what it was now, but I wondered
if that would help me copy a group of cells I use as a template for tracking
credit card expenses.  The way I do it now is to use the "Go to" command,
control+g and enter, for example, a41:p59.  That highlights the cells I want
to copy, and I use control+C to copy them.  Then I select another comparable
area, like a61:p79 with the control+g command again, and paste the template
in.

Does someone know how to define a region, and would doing so make this
process easier?

Great!  That was a lucky guess.
It's just easier to tell them to select all since it won't hurt anything.
Since you use Excel a lot, maybe you can answer a question of mine.
When I insert a graphic into a cell, Jaws stops speaking.  The only thing I
can do is to press escape a couple of times to get it speaking again.
Any solution for this?  Or is that about all I can do?

I started hearing phantom attachment announcements in Outlook once I started
using version 8.  I just assumed it is a bug, and that they'll get around to
fixing it.  On my system, once an attachment is seen in the email list, Jaws
just keeps seeing it, whether it's there or not.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws and Java

For those brave souls who have installed Java and the Access Bridge, have
you found any degradation in system performance?  Also, how are Java and the
Access Bridge for working with the current versions?  Jaws help mentions
version 2.1.4.1 for Java, and I see they are up to 5 now.  Any danger of
getting a version that is beyond Jaws' support?

This link doesn't work for me.  I reach the page, and after an extremely
long wait, am able to see a tab for the software, but cannot read anything
on the page.  Refreshing with either f5 or insert+esc doesn't help.

of it's self. When it has finished installing, you will be placed on a
finish button. Just enter on this button to complete the install. Keep in
mind at any time you would like to repeat the last prompt spoken, just use
the JAWS repeat command insert plus tab.

 

Now you will need to set up the program. The license agreement will pop up.
Shift tab back to the except button and tap enter. Now an accessibility
option screen will pop up all you need to do hear is tab once to (use
recommended settings and skip setup button) and then tap enter. Now all you
need to do is use alt plus F4 to close the program and the next time you
receive a .PDF file you should be able to open it.


I hope these directions are clear, I put them together in about 10 minutes.

I have also experienced very sluggish response when forwarding or replying
to a message if that message was sent as html.  I've always just accepted it
as the nature of the html beast.

Look for the, "continue" button near the bottom of the page.
and then arrow down a little more, and uncheck the checkboxes for the 
additional software.

once you have done this, then garow back up to the continue button
and hit enter on it.
On the next page, just search for the word, "download" until you find the 
download button.
Below that you will find a checkbox for the Google toolbar, if you don't 
want it, then uncheck that box and go back to the download button, and 
press enter.

Note:
This appears to be a download manager for Adobe, so when you run the file,



it will download and install the Adobe Reader.
Seems like a lot of hoops to jump thru, but I didn't see any other 
alternatives.

I would recommend that you look on the main ACBRadio web site and download
the player.  It is an easy to install application which allows you to open
all 4 channels of ACBRadio with one keystroke.  It will interface with
either Windows Media Player or Winamp, and works with either dialup or
broadband connections.

[JAWS-Users] Odd behavior with Jaws 8 and Excel

I'm running the most current of Jaws on an XP Home Edition operating system,
and when I open a workbook, Jaws does not always complete the expected
announcements, i.e., the contents and coordinates of the cell where the
cursor is positioned.  If I use the insert+f4 command, and then Escape
instead of unloading Jaws, the contents and coordinates are announced, and
everything works fine.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior, and is there a more permanent
solution than I have found?
