If you are needed to enter data in a new worksheet, perhaps you could use a
plain new workbook, and then merge it with the existing one.

Quite probably your copy of Word is corrupt for some reason or other. I
expect you will have to either repair or reinstall Word. The programme is
looking for something that isn't there and therefore failing.
