Is there a way to automatically turn off this function?

Hi Anne, try the following.
1. with Word open, go to the menu bar right arrow to format and down to
auto format and press enter.
2. tab to an options button press enter. This opens a multiple page
dialog box. Listen closely as it opens up. I think it will open on the
autoformat
tab,

1. Open the tools menu with alt T and press ENTER on autocorrect.
2. Press CTRL-TAB to access the autoformat as you type tab.
3. Arrow down and uncheck automatic bulleted lists and automatic

Go file menu, save as or save if not done before and then just tab to

I'm not using 2007, but the process should be the same I suspect.
You should be able to insert the date where you want it, using the insert
menu.
The date should update each day as you change the document, but only if you
make changes.
