well, it sounds to me like your ribbon is minimized.
try opening word,
then use the keystroke,
ctrl+f1 key,
now, you should be able to use the menus.

There is a tutorial on using JAWS and Windows live mail 2011. Within
this guide there is a section on how to use the ribbons. It is a fairly
good guide to using them.
