I just researched this answer for a member.
If Word opens with the reading pane view by default and you do not want to have
to change it each time here is what you need to do:

If you want to turn it off for the current session and return to print layout
or normal view then you can click close on the Reading Layout toolbar. (Note:
You can also press ESC or ALT+C to exit reading layout view.)

To prevent the reading layout view from opening automatically when you receive
a Word document go to the Tools menu, click Options, click the General tab,
and then clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box.

Let us translate that:
So go to options, ALT+f, up arrow to options, press enter.
Go to general, first item on this list.
Tab over to clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box, spacebar to
uncheck it.
You are done.

A Ballast for My Soul

Life is like a stormy sea
That tosses to and fro,
But God's Word will ever be
A ballast for my soul.

By its truth I'll be held fast
Till I reach heaven's shore
Where I will be home at last
And sail life's sea no more!
