I recently had this issue too. I did have to increase my vol settings to
100% before I heard the song. I didn't do it your way though, I did first
press spacebar on the "mute" button and nothing happened, then I heard Jaws

When you get to the unmute button, do you have to click on it first before
you can increase the volume with the up arrow button?

Not having that problem with Youtube here using IE. But, System Access or
NVDA works better at accessing the buttons in the flash player.
