Use control semicolon, then hit enter to put in a date.

Did you place a ' in front of your date numbers .if you don't then excel
will think its a ccalculation number and not a date.

Your date format is not set the way you expect.
Ctrl+1 to bring up a dialog to allow you to select a different format.
