No, no ZT installed on this one. The other day after I wrote you and was
checking the problem out further, all the IE pages were already coming up
maximized so I couldn't crash anything! I'll keep an eye on when this is
happening here.

Cher,

Are you running ZoomText by any chance?

I have narrowed this down to appearing to be a ZoomText issue. If I close
ZoomText, I can maximize or minimize windows in IE 11 without any issues.

Hi Cher,

I have noticed issues with maximizing the window if I am in IE 11 also. For
me, it takes me to my default home page for IE 11. Is that what happens to
you when you maximize?

I am running JAWS 18 and ZoomText 11 on Windows 7.

was treated dismissively. I hope you'll report it.

Yes, this does happen sometimes, though I don't think I've experienced it
much lately and I don't use IE anymore.

I just have to say: the jaws "find" command is your friend. Probably one of
the most valuable tools to use on a webpage, in fact.

message/alert that came from Firefox itself, and not JAWS. And indeed,
JAWS

did not really work at all. However, the programme did not crash.

Whatever the case though, I'd still be curious to know why it is that
there

isn't even rudimentary support for FS Quantum in JAWS. It would seem that
even with NVDA 17.3, the version I have as I still haven't installed the
update, the change in Firefox was somewhat anticipated, and attempts were
made to support it.

Hey.

While I don't know precisely what is going on, I don't think it's
entirely just to say that Mozilla has decided that accessibility is
unimportant. In fact, Firefox 57 does work fairly well, right now,
with even the previous (IE, not just released) version of NVDA. It's
not perfect, but they have promised that v58 will be better, and I see
no reason to doubt them on that.
In the meantime, we can keep using the ESR version, which will
continue to be supported, and works great with the screen-reader of
your choice. I don't exactly know why NVDA is ahead of JAWS in this
matter of Firefox 57/Quantum, , but I've yet to hear from anyone using
JAWS 2018 and maybe it works better there? I have JAWS 18, and part of
the reason I've been switching more and more to NVDA lately is that
I'm not really in any position to buy a JAWS upgrade at this time.
Still going to hang on to both though.

That's interesting. When I tried to run FF 57 with JAWS 18, I got a message
warning me that my screen-reader would not function properly. This was a
message/alert that came from Firefox itself, and not JAWS. And indeed, JAWS
did not really work at all. However, the programme did not crash.

Whatever the case though, I'd still be curious to know why it is that there
isn't even rudimentary support for FS Quantum in JAWS. It would seem that
even with NVDA 17.3, the version I have as I still haven't installed the
update, the change in Firefox was somewhat anticipated, and attempts were
made to support it.

This is also what VFO advised users to do in their announcement on the

Hey.

While I don't know precisely what is going on, I don't think it's entirely
just to say that Mozilla has decided that accessibility is unimportant. In
fact, Firefox 57 does work fairly well, right now, with even the previous
(IE, not just released) version of NVDA. It's not perfect, but they have
promised that v58 will be better, and I see no reason to doubt them on
that.
In the meantime, we can keep using the ESR version, which will continue to
be supported, and works great with the screen-reader of your choice. I
don't
exactly know why NVDA is ahead of JAWS in this matter of Firefox
57/Quantum,
, but I've yet to hear from anyone using JAWS 2018 and maybe it works
better
there? I have JAWS 18, and part of the reason I've been switching more and
more to NVDA lately is that I'm not really in any position to buy a JAWS
upgrade at this time. Still going to hang on to both though.

Hi!
I have the same results. If you really need to use IE 11, you can use an
earlier version of JAWS. I use Google Chrome with JAWS 2018, and Windows 10,
and it works like a charm as well.
However, when I get my old computer out that has Windows 7 and JAWS 15, IE
does work like a charm.
If any of you would like my Google Chrome Browser tutorial, I can paste it
into a message and put it on here.
Even Edge works better with JAWS 2018 better than IE 11.
As we know, to use Firefox, version 57 does not work with JAWS hardly at
all.
Take care, guys!

What can IE users do? Probably switch to a browser that is still being
fully supported such as Edge, Chrome or Firefox. There are several web
components that IT no longer even works with, or is very limited with
when using such as, silver light, direct ex, some flash content, not
to mention the security gaps that are within IE.
IT is like holding on to windows 7 at this point. The longer one uses
it, the more issues they will experience. It takes companies such as
JAWS, sometimes more effort to update these programs than stay up to
date with the latest changes that are much more relevant.

Hi Tom,
Try resetting your IE. Here are the instructions below.
How to reset IE 11:
I would recommend re setting IE. Here are the steps to do that.
1. Open IE
2. Press alt + T for tools menu.
3. Press up arrow once and you should be on options. Press the enter key.
4. Press shift + Tab and you should hear General.
5. Press the right arrow key until you hear advance.
6. Tab until you hear reset button.
7. Press enter on the reset button.
8. A dialog box will come up. Press tab once and you will hear something
about checking this box to delete personal information. Press
the spacebar here to check this check box.
9. Tab twice to the reset button and press the spacebar.
Wait a few minutes then close IE and reopen it. Now it should work like new.

Note: checking the box about removing personal information will not remove
your favorites in IE.

even with NVDA 17.3, the version I have as I still haven't installed the
update, the change in Firefox was somewhat anticipated, and attempts were
made to support it.

Actually, on my system Firefox 57 works fine with NVDA, but Firefox crashes
when i try to run it with JAWS 2018.

If Edge had menus and worked completely with Jaws I might switch, same for
Chrome. Firefox never worked well for me. Microsoft has to realize many of
us use IE for its ease of use and they should fix the problems, not all of
us love Edge and the fact that it has taken over two years since its release
to make it somewhat accessible is reprehensible. No keystrokes available or
let's say easily found to operate Edge in the same way is IE. Guessing
isn't really something I want to take time to do. Every time a family

dislike Edge partly because of lack of keystrokes I can get to easily,
partly because in my experience it never works well and I don't want to have
to type in the web address for every page I visit, if URLs were shorter
maybe but I have loads of pages in favorites in IE, accessed with Alt A,
nothing in Edge and no way that is visible or accessible that I have found
to import or access without memorizing every URL I use, not happening.

So, for now I stick with what works and yell at the computer when it hangs,
become unhappy but at least 99% of what I need is right where I put it with
keystrokes available if I happen to forget one.

Maybe sighted people do not need menus, or keystrokes, I personally work
best with a menu or even a ribbon.

His is my opinion and your mileage will vary.

Give me a super reason to use Edge including keeping my home page of my
choice, a way to access sites without having to go to the run command and
type in the full URL as Jonathan does on the podcasts, allow me the
flexibility I experience 99% of the time in IE but without the crashes and I
may move to using it.

Chrome has many of the same issues as Edge, no menus, no visible keystrokes,
it is a guessing game and I don't usually have time to play three guesses
and none of them count.

Accessibility, great for those who can see the screen even with
magnification in each browser, not so great for those of us who depend on
Jaws alone because we can't get clues from the screen any other way and why
it has taken more than two years to do a halfway job of fixing this, leaving
all the fixes to third parties who can't get where they need to make it fast

Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet Explorer or Jaws?

2017-12-15 Thread JM Casey
I don't know. I've always had these sorts of problems with internet
Explorer, mostly with it closing unexpectedly because of some error, or
scripts on a page just slowing everything down so much that they stopped
working. Back in the day, most of my IT friends were telling people not to
use IE. It took me a long time to get on board with Firefox, when I was
using my XP machine, and even then I ended up going back to iE from time to
time because sometimes it did seem like JAWS worked nicely with it. As time
went on, though, I found this to be less and less the case. It got to the
point where many of my favourite websites just did not work properly in IE
anymore. You could still use them, but some of the functionality just wasn't
available. Now when I try to go to goodreads.com with iE, for instance, I
can't even find my own reviews when I click on a book's page. The WWW is
just leaving Internet Explorer behind, and Microsoft has acknowledged this
by bringing in an entire new browsing experience: Edge. Edge is n o good for
me though, and I'm not going to settle for something that works so poorly.
But Microsoft has never really dissuaded anyone from using third party
products, and well they shouldn't. At this point, I think that's really what
most of us have to do.

It would be nice if browsers, as well as other software, had accessibility
built into them, and I guess that is the "new paradigm" of things. This way
the screen-reader developers wouldn't constantly have to be struggling to
keep up. But, I guess this isn't really the problem, as far as IE goes, most
of the time.

A lot of sighted people, or that is, mostly computer "experts", prefer to
have keystrokes. I haven't really bothred with Edge because I mostly love
Firefox and find that it works great. However, it is indeed surprising if
it's as unkeyboard-friendly as all that. The reason I say that is that
Microsoft, more than anyone else, is usually really good with making sure
everything is perfectly workable from the keyboard. They don't do this for
blind users, necessarily, but of course it works out very well for us, too.
Windows 10 is full of great keyboard tricks, and you'd really think Edge
would follow suit. Ah well.

Except that I don't see this behavior with Chrome, and one sees it
intermittently seemingly on any web site.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet Explorer or Jaws?

2017-12-15 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Tom,
Try resetting your IE.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet Explorer or Jaws?

2017-12-15 Thread rosecombs52
If Edge had menus and worked completely with Jaws I might switch, same for
Chrome. Firefox never worked well for me. Microsoft has to realize many of
us use IE for its ease of use and they should fix the problems, not all of
us love Edge and the fact that it has taken over two years since its release
to make it somewhat accessible is reprehensible. No keystrokes available or
let's say easily found to operate Edge in the same way is IE. Guessing
isn't really something I want to take time to do. Every time a family
member uses Edge here nothing reads and Yes, Jaws is set to read Edge. I
dislike Edge partly because of lack of keystrokes I can get to easily,
partly because in my experience it never works well and I don't want to have
to type in the web address for every page I visit, if URLs were shorter
maybe but I have loads of pages in favorites in IE, accessed with Alt A,
nothing in Edge and no way that is visible or accessible that I have found
to import or access without memorizing every URL I use, not happening.

Accessibility, great for those who can see the screen even with
magnification in each browser, not so great for those of us who depend on
Jaws alone because we can't get clues from the screen any other way and why
it has taken more than two years to do a halfway job of fixing this, leaving
all the fixes to third parties who can't get where they need to make it fast
and easy is a point against Microsoft! Accessibility seems to rule, only if
you can somewhat see the screen.

What can IE users do? Probably switch to a browser that is still being fully
supported such as Edge, Chrome or Firefox. There are several web components
that IT no longer even works with, or is very limited with when using such
as, silver light, direct ex, some flash content, not to mention the security
gaps that are within IE.
IT is like holding on to windows 7 at this point. The longer one uses it,
the more issues they will experience. It takes companies such as JAWS,
sometimes more effort to update these programs than stay up to date with the
latest changes that are much more relevant.

Hi!
I have the same results. If you really need to use IE 11, you can use an
earlier version of JAWS. I use Google Chrome with JAWS 2018, and Windows 10,
and it works like a charm as well.
However, when I get my old computer out that has Windows 7 and JAWS 15, IE does
work like a charm.
If any of you would like my Google Chrome Browser tutorial, I can paste it into
a message and put it on here.
Even Edge works better with JAWS 2018 better than IE 11.
As we know, to use Firefox, version 57 does not work with JAWS hardly at all.
Take care, guys!

Yes, I went to the advanced settings of internet options, and saw 2 to 3
references to images. The hover over images is off. Am I checking in the
right place.

Turning off images in the Internet Explorer settings helps to a very small
yet perhaps still noticeable degree.

Since MS is no longer developing IE I think VFO is not going to keep
supporting it. Either that or they are very lazy about fixing the hang issue
with IE since it has been going on for a couple of years now.
I dont like the way things are going for us. firefox has decided blind
accessibility is not important and Edge is not supported by Jaws very well
and IE is getting left behind that leaves us with Chrome... Good for Google

I like a lot of people have been having trouble With IE and
Jaws. This evening I fired up an old HP PC that I picked up for $100 a while
back. It had a fresh install of the latest Windows 7, IE 11 and Jaws
version 15. It works like a charm on the Internet, no crashing like my Dell
PC with the same configuration except for Jaws witch is Jaws 2018. I will
have to use it for a while but it looks to me like the problem I have been
having is Jaws 2018. Tom

What can IE users do? Probably switch to a browser that is still being
fully
supported such as Edge, Chrome or Firefox. There are several web
components

that IT no longer even works with, or is very limited with when using such
as, silver light, direct ex, some flash content, not to mention the
security

gaps that are within IE.
IT is like holding on to windows 7 at this point. The longer one uses it,
the more issues they will experience. It takes companies such as JAWS,
sometimes more effort to update these programs than stay up to date with
the

latest changes that are much more relevant.
