Neil, I’m running windows 8, and have no problems with it! the start menu is different from windows 7 because it has all the apps! on the other hand, I use a utility called classic shell if you ever heard of it, it’s a software utility that brings back the classic start menu in previous versions of windows! once you have it installed, if you want the regular windows 8 start menu, hold down the shift key, and hit the windows key at the same time, and you’ll have the windows 8 start menu! now if you want the classic start menu, then hit the windows key by itself.
