Many of the Gmail instructions assume that you are using Standard view, which does not work as well for screen reader users. I have done what you are trying to do using standard view. It's sometimes not easy, but with determination, it can be done. When you are done deleting the messages, just switch back to HTML view. I am guessing that you are using Gmail in the HTML view. Many of the Gmail instructions assume that you are using Standard view, which does not work as well for screen reader users.
