Most likely no one fixed anything. If CNN's underlying web page format had changed significantly, ResearchIt could easily stop working. For example, whenever Google decides to put up a special web page to celebrate some special anniversary, they often make things a mess for screen readers. Since those Google events only last one day, we are back to normal in a short while. Your experience with CNN in such a short time suggests that CNN had simply changed their web page format (or had their own internal web problems) and later settled back to a format that ResearchIt could use.
