I think the best way to answer your query is to explain how the JAWS menu is
laid out. But don't begin by pressing alt after you've pressed JAWS key+j.
so:

JAWS key+j opens the JAWS menu
Right away, JAWS verbalizes "Options submenu." You can use your up and down
arrow keys for other choices or press enter to open the options submenu.
If you open the options submenu, you'll find other choices that you can
locate by pressing the up and down arrow keys. For example, there's
so-called "Basics" and two "voice" dialogs. Press enter on the one you want
and proceed through the dialog by tabbing.
If, instead of pressing enter on "options" you arrow up, you'll notice such
choices as "About," "Help," "Utilities," and so on. Most of these choices
are submenus. You press enter to locate the choices within the submenu.

To my mind, a shortcoming in the JAWS menu is that once you click on
something and then escape out of it, you simultaneously escape out of the
JAWS menu system. If you're exploring the menu, it means being bounced out
of it and pressing JAWS key+j several times. But the effort is worth it.

I hope this is clear.

To follow up on Fernando's explanation, putting JAWS in the system tray
saves the annoyance of finding JAWS every time you cycle through open
applications with alt-tab. You bring JAWS up only when you want to with JAWS

When you say that the JAWS screen disappeared, it is because you have
checked the Run JAWS from System Tray option in the Basic Settings dialog,
which display JAWS as a background application icon on the system tray
(right near the clock at the bottom of the screen) instead of as an opened

Second, I am running JAWS 17, Windows 10 on a Dell laptop. I sometimes get

It depends on which version of Windows 10. Prior to the Creator's Update,
version 1703 and above, it is Windows-Enter. With 1703 and up, it is

Hello;

The keystroke is:

Ctrl+windows+enter.

what they conceal is vital.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Inquiry

Afternoon all.

I have a question. I was having a bit of an issue with JAWS earlier today,
where JAWS was not speaking at all. I tried closing different things out,
but there was no success. So, in a strange way, can anyone tell me the
keyboard commands to activate Windows Narrator, for such an issue when JAWS
is not speaking? I am using JAWS 17, Windows 10 and a Dell laptop. Many
thanks in appreciation.

Jerry

Hi Paul,

Try the following;

To change this setting press, Insert / Jaws Key + V, press the letter T,
until you land on TAB Measurement Indication - On, then press the space bar
to turn it off.

This option controls whether to indicate the new measurement from the left
margin when the TAB key is pressed. The default setting is On.

Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

 Hi All,

How do you turn off the announcement of tab stops in a word document by
jaws
versions 9 and also version 12?.
A couple of PC's in our classroom has this issue and would appreciate any
 help you can give.

 Many thanks,

 Paul.
