to messages the first option is arrange by conversations and see if that is
checked.
I notice you mentioned a conversations button being greyed
nd have "sort by" set to "sent, ascending".

In the View tab, go to the Sort By option, and select by date. Additionally, in
this menu of sorting criteria you can check the Show in Groups option to expand
or collapse date ranges by pressing RIGHT or LEFT ARROW.
