main branch means ... head revision, no tags or something? Any special
command-line options for cvs? I´m not used to cvs anymore since we switched 
to perforce (no more strange effects if you accidently copy a directory
including
CVS folders ;-)

I still want to see that whole mess rewritten, but I guess I should either
do it myself or shut up about it.

I say go ahead and commit your changes (on the main branch), preferably
with some tests.  Having tests will mean that rewriting the deployment
stuff at some point in the future will be easier.
