Doh! Scratch issue "c"
It hadn't clicked with me that it displays as a sidebar in the project
page, but not on the build page. that makes sense to me.

right now, when I do a build with my try-before-commit project, the build
page shows
1) A red exclamation mark telling me the build failed
2) A build number and date
3) Who started the build
4) The repository revision being used... which is displayed 3 times (I
check it out on three
