Dear Alice,

Thanks for your report. You have followed the appropriate route,
although something has stopped your message from the usual path.

Not sure, but this might happen in you are not a subscriber of the
list.
We may need to rephrase the original advice.

All that message is normal when you do not have Java installed.
Unfortunately, recent updates to Java have made detection tricky if
not plainly impossible, so occasionally the message is displayed
under wrong circumstances. For example, Java may be installed but
disallowed in the broswer, and the yellow message will be displayed.
The detection algorithm is old and it may indeed be impossible to
update it to be effective in those difficult cases. Sorry. That's one
of the reasons why JSmol has been developed as an alternative, but
the switch from Jmol to JSmol must be done by the page author and so
does not happen quickly.

That is reasonable, although tehre may be something else needed to
unlock Java applets. Try to see if there are Java Security options
somewhere in the system (Control Panel in Windows) or in the browser,
other than the classical ones you are describing as correctly set.
I have no experience with MacOS, so maybe you could post your
problem in the jmol-users list and others will guide you. Better, I
will forward your message to the list; make sure you are subscribed
to jmol-users so you receive replies.

Yes, that's the sort of thing that escapes easy answers: different
browsers following different policies. Other Mac users' experiences
should help there.

If those are your pages, one option is to change them. Were you using
Jmol.js or manually edited applet tags? If not, edit the pages to use
Jmol.js, as it acters better for different browsers. In any case, you
may also consider changing your pages to JSmol (see the Jmol WIki for
advice).
Otherwise, the Java policies are anyway hard to diagnose now. For
example, I cannot run my own pages from local disk now, but they run
fine from the web server. That's Java protecting me from myself :)
Hard to explain.
