As far as I know user defined variables or functions (from jmolscript)
are not saved within the Jmol state.
Of course, this makes perfect sense. I had noted that a quoted script with
directories works while without quotes, it doesn't. Your explanation hadn't
occurred to me.

Don't recall that you did. Tinker uses the same format for dynamics archives
with multiple structures. In my test, load tinker::argon.arc read the first
model (of five) and stopped.
