what I think your idea boils down to
Don't think of "Solo" and "Multi-Solo" as such. Its a mind set thing
really.
Its more about turning off the tracks. Then perhaps have a "Turn all
tracks off but this one." that could be thought of as solo.

I'll second that. It seems
to me that making this act as most people would expect is a sensible.
As most devices and software behave like this conforming is a good
thing. I hate to mention the Gimp... but its not that hard to learn
when you change it to what most people are used to like Gimp
OK I just thought of something...
If you have a separate pause button you can use it in conjunction with
the record button.
