Wow, that is handy. Seems like after years of using josm I am still
learning nifty little tricks like this.
Should be pretty easy to extend this to middle click if the base
functionality is already there I would expect (although I don't know
the josm
Would be a nice feature. Meanwhile you can use double click in an area to
select it.

Right now if I used middle click on the interior of a closed way, nothing
shows up.
To select the closed way requires finding one of the edges.
