I've "fixed" the first issue with the tabs by not calling a #container
and instead making that an ajax call too. Cheating a little bit, I
know but at least it works now.

Crossfading - if I understood you correctly - is not supported right
now. There is a ticket for this and we're going to tackle it for the
next release I guess.
