Re: [jug-discussion] Mac check

2006-09-20 Thread Jim Secan
I've got a 22-month-old G5 iMac that's cranking along very nicely on Tiger,
which is a pity because I lust after the new 24" machine. I just recently
purchased a black MacBook, and while I've not used it much yet it has not
caused me any troubles at all other than some odd sleep/no-sleep behavior.
No "mooing" sounds and no high heat. Nice little beastie.

One source of concern is taking the MacBook on trips. Some airlines are
requiring that batteries from Dell and Apple laptops be removed and packed
separate from the laptops. While this is straightforward on a Dell, it
requires opening things up on an Apple, not something I'm too keen on.
I've not decided how to deal with this aspect yet. I may have to stick
with my old Dell Inspirion road warrior (weighs about as much as Conan the
Governator) until sanity returns.

You know I'm an updater (well will be once I get more money saved
again).
Right now I've got the dual G5 and a core duo imac. I did get rid of
the G4 800 since it really was getting a little too slow for my use.
In my experience the intels hold up to or beat the ppc machines (my
imac seems just as fast as the g5 and cost a lot less). I'd say if
it does what you want no need to upgrade, but with the powerbook I
bet if you tried the macbook (not a bad price) or macbook pro (a
little much for me) you would find it's no contest.
If I were you I would wait a while for the core 2 update though.
That will probably be my next mac. (plus you can run parallels and
dual boot for games).

As for experience, I wouldn't trade my Macs for anything right now
(other than a faster Mac).

I have aPBook G4 1.5 with 1 gb of ram and it has done everything I
have ever asked it to extremely well (from JBoss, to a Solaris port

which in some ways is more dependable than my powerbook. I'm
wondering (Nick, Art, Warner, Rick, et al.) if others on the list

adolescent (in relative terms) Apples.

Personally, I'm chomping at the bit to get one of the new MacBook's
or Pros (probably the Pro). I am definitely starting to feel the age
on my PowerBook g4 12". I'm ready to move up to more ram, more screen
area (just the 15", but widescreen). This machine is starting to feel
slow when I want to do alot with it (especially eclipse-related).

I'm also thinking about getting an iMac or a low-end Pro for some
beefier home processing but that'll be after I get the notebook
(which will still be my primary work machine).

He's right. The quantity and quality of food at google would ALMOST
justify the 500% cost of living increase to relocate to Silicon

Almost, but not quite...

FWIW: I couldn't survive without GMail for my work account. Only
