... then jujucharms.com will render the screenshot.
Clearly this is a nice easy way to allow charm authors to add
screenshots to their charm in the store, however,

You could, the only requirement is that it's served over HTTPS. We're
simply recommending imgur as an example of a free image hosting service
which has https enabled.
