It depends how much time do you have...
that is how much time you need to now the jump architecture and to get
an idea about the functionality of the plugin (e.g your familarity with
concepts of rasters, vector-overlays, graph structures).
Another thing would be to know if the plugin will be free afterwrads.
i have some ideas about larger projects (e.g. 1) a plugin for creating a
print layout = a first version exists already, or 2) a plugin to do
coordinate tranformations based on the new geotools 2.1 library, 3) full
persistent topology - nodes, edges, faces - support, or 4: very
important would be a map algebra dialog (doing math operation) for
raster layers) or very interesting:
5) a plugin to read data from Oracle Database (evtl. with respect to
their spatial extension?) and later to write to Oracle.
but smaller things may be needed as well. E.g. the improvement of the
styling: 1)having a more flexible setting of text-labels (e.g. defining
an order of text position around a point)or 2) Customized point styles
(...e.g. there exists a plugin, but it seems to have errors, but you
could use it as a base)
3) implement more classsification methods for the colour theming (Jenks,
Natural breaks)
If it is necessary i can think about some more stuff...
So maybe the first questions to answer are:
1) How much time do you have?
2) Where are you strength with respect to
- programming (how good is your java knowledge, e.g. in years)?
- familarity with for instance GUI programming (ever done that?, do
you worked with eclipse or some other IDE)
- data structures (graphs?)
- databases
= to find your preferences
3) what do you know about gis (courses you attended)
but maybe others have other ideas, especially needed for their projects
(e.g. Hannes, Ole,...)
