Re: [k-9-mail] Re: K9 doesn't write to sd card

2019-01-26 Thread Uwe Deutscher
The fact that K-9 is for free does not inevitably mean that it is not allowed
to improve and become better and that repeated and boring actions as to
manually copy and paste attachments to SD should not be avoided.

Most of my other apps can write to my external SD under Android 7.1, so it is
possible and can be solved!

It makes sense to store files sent as attachments on external SD, because
internal storage is limited, not extendable and reserved for program data.

I have only about 20 GB of internal storage free and available, but 256 GB on
my external SD.

So internal storage is very short and valuable!

Why should I waste it for files sent as attachments?

So I always have to manually copy and paste them to my external SD, because K-9
is not able to write to SD!

In the very beginning I formatted the SD card as "internal" storage. And
after a few days the SD card stopped working. And nearly all apps are
crashed.

hard for an app to determine what it will have access to.

I understand:

In the settings the external storage (SD card) can be selected - but

that this setting is not possible for Android 7 and higher.

And you deny any changes to inform the users that this offered setting

Re: [k-9-mail] Re: K9 doesn't write to sd card

2019-01-26 Thread Uwe Deutscher
This excerpt deals with a different topic!

It is about moving the K-9 program to SD.

I was writing about the disability of K-9 to store attachments on my external
SD.

Most of my other apps can store data on my external SD, only K-9 cannot,
although it pretends to have this abilty!

So, please: the k-9 developers should solve this issue instead of
writing this in https://k9mail.github.io/documentation/storage.html :

"External storage however has to be considered potientially removable.
But large APKs can be stored on external storage by request. K-9 doesn’t
do this - our APK is not large and most users don’t want their e-mail
account being removed when they take out an SD card which has been
designated as external storage.  ...   the number of devices with SD
cards is still quite small, the way they are detected by the API varies
heavily with each version of Android and the amount of normal storage is
normally considerable. Hence we don’t see strong demand and ability
for specifically supporting SD cards on versions where it is actually
possible without fragile code. ... This may change in the future, but is
dependent on developers having phones with SD card support to develop
against (as well as no higher priority issues)."

I doubt, that this will be done in the nearer future.

So, please:  Write In the k-9 settings for "account / storage" something
like "external storage (SD card; NOT working for Android 7 and higher)"

Re: [k-9-mail] Re: K9 doesn't write to sd card

2018-12-27 Thread Uwe Deutscher
Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately I am not familiar enough with program text sourcecode to
unterstand what I should do now to solve the problem.

All my other apps manage to write on my SD card.

Some of them after explicit confirming writing rights.

Only K-9 ignores every permittion granted and refuses to write on my SD card.

My Sony Xperia Z5 Premium has a built in storage memory named "emulated SD
storage" of only 7 GB left.

And I have a 128 GB Micro SD installed which is called "external SD".

I would like K-9 to write on this external SD, but K-9 permanently fails to do
so.

So, what should I do now?

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a k-9 dev. I'm not even a Java dev.

https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/blob/master/app/core/src/main/java/com/fsck/k9/mailstore/StorageManager.java#L380

"Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory();"

https://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/Environment#getExternalStorageDirectory()

"Note: don't be confused by the word "external" here. This directory can
better be thought as media/shared storage. It is a filesystem that can
hold a relatively large amount of data and that is shared across all
applications (does not enforce permissions). Traditionally this is an SD
card, but it may also be implemented as built-in storage in a device
that is distinct from the protected internal storage and can be mounted
as a filesystem on a computer.

On devices with multiple users (as described by UserManager), each user
has their own isolated shared storage. Applications only have access to
the shared storage for the user they're running as."

Multiple user profiles were introduced in 4.2 .. which I presume
coincides with the recommendation to use getExternalStorageDirectory()

So it seems to me (see the disclaimer above) that K-9 is "doing the
right thing" here as per Android's own developer guidelines. Maybe it's
time to remove the references to external SD cards from the UI.

Re: [k-9-mail] Re: K9 doesn't write to sd card

2018-12-26 Thread Uwe Deutscher
No, definitly not!

I have a Sony Xperia Z5 Premium under Android 7.2 and the latest version of
K-9.

The problem started immediately with my migration from HTC Sensation under
Android 4.x to this smartphone.

K-9 refuses to write to the external SD although all necessary rights have been
granted.

I always have to copy and paste the files manually to the SD!

In my Android phone it is able to write to the card.

Might it be that your phone contains a security mechanism of some kind for
files on the SD card?

This still is an annoying issue and has been for a very long time now.

The only workaround is to copy and paste manually, which is an extraordinary
stupid one!

This is definitly a priority one New Year's proposition for the developing team!
