I stand corrected. There was still some script setting the environment variable
at KDE login. I reverted back to regular Firefox and things work again.
Thunderbird seems to behave properly again as well.

In addition, KDE also fails to put the system into standby while the modem is
attached and detected by the OS.
systemctl suspend works, however.
