I already tried with a fresh user, this did not solve the problem.
When I find some time, I will try to install a new distro (or even the same but
in a new installation) and will post the results here.

When I kill and restart plasmashell the icons flicker and appear for a short
moment just to disappear again right away.

As soon, as I connect the docking station and with that the other screens, the
icons disappear again

When switching back to single monitor (the laptop screen with resolution
1920x1080), the symbols re-appear, when I rebuild(F5) the desktop
So maybe its something with the multi monitor setup.

Ok, resolution does not seem to be the cause, as lowering the resolution of the
big monitor does not bring back the icons.
Also tried with a smaller monitor, the icons keep disappeared.
