I'm all for this! The way redshift does it is by simply decreasing the gamma,
which allows for a lower effective brightness than just turning the actual
brightness all the way down.

Yes, didn't think to mention that, but it seems to be the cause: I'm using a
global scale of 150%, just tried switching to 100% and the tearing is gone.
