One quirk I noticed just today: Cover switch animation works ok if I have a
youtube video playing in a browser (Opera Beta in my case) tab.

Indeed, it happens with other keys/non-printable characters, like hitting
backspace or Ctrl + any of '[', ']', '\' for example.

I just want to let you guys know that this behaviour change affects me too,

FWIW, I'm suffering from the same problem.
In the linked bug report (415164) someone suggests replacing yakuake with
