i got lucky and my issue was a matter of going in to pulse and turning the
sound on their to get my notification sounds, but shouldn't of been off by
default in the first place. and yes it's off by default. i know

o.k. long story short i just bumped my threads on both linuxquestions and the
kubuntu forums and got my issue resolved. barfly prompted me to recheck pulse
audio. on the playback tab system sounds were disabled
