I'd say the reason is to save space and bandwidth when copying into other apps.
I use the feature in question to paste auto-copied-but-not-saved images from
Spectacle into chat apps. If the images are JPEGs, they

This bug could be caused by a limitation of how QMimeData::setImageData()
works. There is a difference between how Spectacle's drag & drop and copy image
actions handle images.
