I absolutely love this program and have been using it for a couple of
years. Originally it was quite flakey in Windows, but now it seems pretty
stable.

The keywords do appear in the metadate sidebar under the IPTC tab.
Yes the tags do appear after a reread as you suggest.
How can I get them to display automatically (ie. without doing a reread)?

Please also look in the digiKam metadata viewer in the right sidebar to see
whether you can find the tag entries. And where they are stored. There are many
places in images where tags can be written.
