As a user and producer of Kdenlive tutorials, I would like to be able to reduce
the height of the timeline, so I have more space for other elements while not
working with the timeline or in general in simple one-track projects.

This is entirely a feature request and if it is approved, I would recommend to
wait until after the next release to include it, just in case it might trigger
not yet discovered bugs.
