I just tried to import a .png image sequence I rendered out from Blender using
17.08.3, and got the same problematic result.
Steps:
(1) Click on Add Clip
(2) Check the "Import image sequence" box

Maybe one possible solution would be to remove the checkbox in the Add Clip
window and change the menu action name of "Add Slideshow Clip" to "Add Image
Sequence"? That would be more easily
