Maybe the difference is that we're using an older version of Qt that doesn't
work with the empy lproj folder hack?

I remember trying this before, but never dig enough to come with a proper fix.
On my system at least the empty .lproj folders on krita does nothing, however

Correct. I believe that entries should also be added to Info.plist, but I don't
