I should have taken a look before posting, it seems like very similar issues
have been reported previously. What piques me is the fact that it happens
inconsistently across reboots. Mainly looking at

Found some nvidia driver leftovers (module was being loaded but doing
nothing)... got rid of those and the issue has not been happening for now.
Still something weird because the display worked fine
