Indeed, I was using the Synaptics drivers for X11.

I suspect Evert is using the Synaptics-specific touchpad settings page on X11
(which shows this setting) and the Libinput-specific touchpad settings page on

You can reinstate the old behaviour by adding
[autodisable]
DisableWhenMousePluggedIn=true
to ~/.config/touchpadrc
At least, this still works for me and I get a notification that the touchpad
has been disabled
