I did find another difference, which is that the maximum bit depth the driver
is allowed to use was set to 8 in the broken session, instead of 16. I doubt

Okay same audio file in the same project, one being the suggested 16-bit PCM

One could only guess what the cause is. digiKam crash, bug in MariaDB (there
are bug entries for 10.3 for corrupted tables as well). A disk problem can also
