[kwin] [Bug 460404] New: [Regression]: Kwin 5.26.0 uses software renderer instead of GLX

2022-10-13 Thread Dan
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460404

Bug ID: 460404
Summary: [Regression]: Kwin 5.26.0 uses software renderer
instead of GLX
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: git-stable-Plasma/5.26
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: glx
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: da...@protonmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.99.0
Qt Version: 5.15.5
Kernel Version: 6.0.1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with Max-Q Design/PCIe/SSE2

With Kwin 5.25.5, the compositor works fine with GLX, but after upgrading to
5.26.0, Kwin will use only the software renderer and warn about degraded
performance. So it's probably a regression, since it was working with 5.25.5
and nothing was changed, except for the Plasma upgrade.

Any hints? Thanks.

2022-10-13 Thread Shmerl

Here is how you can test it.

Create test.sh file like this: (let's say you place it in your
$HOME/tmp/test.sh).

#!/bin/bash
kdialog --msgbox "Test!"

Then create a test.desktop (in $HOME file like this, assuming your user is
named foobar and assuming this icon is present on your system:
/usr/share/icons/breeze/status/64/dialog-error.svg):

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Value=1.0
Type=Application
Name=Test 1
GenericName=Test 1
Comment=Test 1
Icon=/usr/share/icons/breeze/status/64/dialog-error.svg
StartupWMClass=org.kde.kdialog
Exec="/home/foobar/tmp/test.sh"

Then run kbuildsycoca5 to update your launchers and icons cache.

Start Test 1 from the launcher (like with krunner or etc.) and observe that
Error icon is displayed in Task Manager, but not in Task Switcher.

When some custom .desktop file sets StartupWMClass for its application and also
sets an icon file for it, Task Switcher isn't picking up that association and
on Wayland for example is using a generic Wayland icon. I tested it with Breeze
and Cover Switch task switchers, both demonstrated this problem.

In comparison, Task Manager does read it correctly and sets the icon properly
accordingly, so something isn't done right with task switchers in particular.

Use relayout locking

This makes use of the layout locking freature introduced in

The resize of the layout area can happen either by screen resolution
change or available screen area change (a panel appears or is resized)
This is not an atomic operation, as width and height are usually set in
2 different operations, and even worse the layout area is resized to
match the available one with an animation, so many intermediate resizes
that should never cause a relayout happen.
A compression timer limits the actual relayouts to hopefully one,
but if the system is really slowed down
(for instance, startup) the timer may expire and cause relayouts in
non useful sizes, losing the needed configuration
The lock blocks all relayout and config writes when the size of the
layout area doesn't correspond to corona availablescreenrect, which are
the only "settled" cases.

Sorry, I never hit "Save" on my response!

I don't think this was affected by the linked commit. On the surface, this
looks like it's simply grabbing the wrong refresh rate, as the animation is
always smooth, but running at a framerate that looks like exactly 60 FPS. From
setting my monitor to 60 hz and eyeballing the animation smoothness, I can
confirm that the appearance is consistent with the behavior I've observed with
the Present Windows effect. If someone is willing to point me in the right
direction, I'd be happy to give it a whirl myself.

[kde] [Bug 460400] New: migrate all ordinary ~/.config/ files into suitable ~/.config/ subdirectories

2022-10-13 Thread Felix Miata
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460400

Bug ID: 460400
Summary: migrate all ordinary ~/.config/ files into suitable
~/.config/ subdirectories
Classification: I don't know
   Product: kde
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: unspecified
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Keywords: accessibility, efficiency, usability
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kdelibs-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: mrma...@earthlink.net
CC: arne_...@web.de, fa...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

Original summary:
migrate all ordinary ~/.config/ files into suitable ~/.config/ subdirectories

Problem: User experiences errant Plasma behavior. User creates and logs in as
new user and errant Plasma behavior is absent. User wants to reset his personal
settings by deleting settings files in ~/.config/, but cannot clearly
distinguish between KDE/Plasma settings files and settings for other apps or
DEs with settings files in ~/.config/.

Solution: move all files ever extant in root of ~/.config/ into suitably named
subdirectories of ~/.config/ so that users won't have to guess which to delete
to extinguish errant behavior.

example user problem report:
https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/576325-Dark-monitor-ans-HDMI-off

I would have selected product kdelibs had there been any way apparent from
links on https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi to get there, or its presence in
any product select list in any of the categories via the "First, you must pick
a classification on which to enter a bug:" see bug 460396

journalctl output

SUMMARY

I have a dual monitor setup (1 DP monitor and 1 hdmi TV) where only 1 screen is
on as default.
When I turn on second monitor (TV) and ask plasma to switch primary out to
second monitor (TV) and turn off the primary out (DP) -- I use the Display
Configuration Widget for this --, the wallpaper changes (becomes the wallpaper
of the secondary monitor I use when both are on) and the widgets that are
placed on the primary monitor disappear.

I also noted that if at login the secondary monitor (TV) is turned on, KDE
does not see it (I cannot switch output) and the desktop is shown only on the
primary monitor (default behavior)
To get KDE to 'see' the TV I have to turn it off and on again
The above was not happening with latest 5.25.5

All above using wayland

below output of journalctl when trying to switch output from DP to hdmi (TV
turned on and I want to see the desktop on TV and DP off)

My system as below (Archlinux with latest KDE& Plasma)

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.0

[systemsettings] [Bug 460398] New: When display scale changes, all position and size rules need to be changed manually

2022-10-13 Thread bugzilla_noreply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460398

Bug ID: 460398
Summary: When display scale changes, all position and size
rules need to be changed manually
Classification: Applications
   Product: systemsettings
   Version: git-stable-Plasma/5.26
  Platform: Archlinux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: kcm_kwinrules
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: gudvinr+...@gmail.com
CC: isma...@gmail.com, plasma-b...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

If you have rules that change position and/or size and then change scale,
display starts being smaller/bigger virtually and thus old values do not work
anymore.

I personally have quite a bit of those rules to position media players, etc on
different screens so it means I need to change each one individually. And if
you change scale in the future it should be done again.

Also after changing display style of screen coordinates from newX x newY to
oldX x oldY@scale it is now impossible to know what your real resolution even
is, so you need to open calculator and do that yourself which is rather
inconvenient.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create window rule that places window at some positions other than 0x0 in
virtual screen space
2. Open window that you created rule for and confirm its position in physical
space on monitor
3. Close window
4. Change display scale in display configuration
5. Open same window again

OBSERVED RESULT
Display will be placed using same pixel coordinates which are not in the same
physical position on screen.

EXPECTED RESULT
Position from rules uses scale factors to calculate position and size for
windows.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.99.0
Qt Version: 5.15.6
Kernel Version: 6.0.1-zen1-1-zen (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

There will be complications caused by use of multiple displays.
For example, if you have 2 displays, one of which is 1000x500 and another one
is 500x1000 and you apply scale 150% for the first and 125% for second one,
then window placed at 1250x0 in pixel coordinates should be located at 866x0
in virtual screen space (1000*100/150 + 250*100/125) if my calculations are
correct.

1-click on a "Clone This Bug" link, e.g.
https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?cloned_bug_id=94611 on
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94611

Actual behavior:
1-opens "First, you must pick a classification on which to enter a bug:" page
2-none of the selections leads to a form from which kdelibs can be selected
3-neither kdelibs nor kdecore is selectable as product/component

Expected behavior:
1-enter bug page opens
2-summary is pre-filled
3-kdelibs is preselected
4-kdecore is preselected
5-all relevant else not needing change is pre-selected/pre-filled
6-comment/description has been filled with comment #0 from bug to clone from

I tried several of the selections on the "First, you must pick a classification
on which to enter a bug: page."
 None produced an
expected way forward for a Bugzilla & KDE user of more than two decades.

What lead to this was I was trying to use bug 94611 as a pseudo template to
file a bug against kdelibs/kdecore, nothing to do with XML or XSD.

SUMMARY

The reason I switched to KDE wayland, despite it's shortcomings, is because of
the staggering amount of applications that have no support for a DPI other then
96, as well as X11's shortcomings with multi-monitor setups (I like being able
to set my second monitor to it's proper resolution while retaining the DPI it
should have)

On that note, I'm also quite annoyed with applications being blurry. Ideally,
it's arguable whether smooth scaling even needs to be used because some of
these applications would actually look better using nearest neighbor scaling,
but I digress: I think that the newest feature that lets you let applications
handle scaling themselves is a welcome addition. But as I said earlier, some
applications do not do this correctly. So while I hate the default scaling,
it's actually a necessity for many programs...and yet, not others.

Alls this to say, I think that the "let programs handle their own scaling"
option should be offered on a per application basis.

How it would look in use

SUMMARY
Add support for search tags in dolphin. Search tags would show search results
with files whose metadata matches the tag's condition.

***

EXAMPLE USE CASES (conditions => results)
`??image:width>1000px => All images with the width resolution over 1000px`

`??image:height>=3000px => All images with the height resolution over or at
3000px`

`??date:created>10-01-2020 ??date:created<10-01-2021 => Return all files
created within 10-01-2020 and 10-01-2021`

Git commit 16c6c3d84795257e1576a20775d8e15f09c5aad3 by Aaron Rainbolt, on
behalf of David Edmundson.
Committed on 12/10/2022 at 23:00.
Pushed by ngraham into branch 'Plasma/5.24'.

Sync activities after kwin restart

Activities are loaded async. During this time any fetch of activity
information is incorrect as we will treat any settings as invalid.

We need to ignore attempts to set activities during this time, but also
refresh Window's concept of activities once we are loaded.

This option is only relevant for "Multiple Document Mode" set to "Subwindows",
if set to Tabs it will do nothing. When in subwindows the background space in
which the subwindows float is set to the image you select. This has no effect
on the border around the canvas of the image

[frameworks-baloo] [Bug 460390] New: Wishlist: Baloo debugging

2022-10-13 Thread bugzilla_noreply
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460390

Bug ID: 460390
   Summary: Wishlist: Baloo debugging
Classification: Frameworks and Libraries
   Product: frameworks-baloo
   Version: 5.99.0
  Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: baloo-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: tagwer...@innerjoin.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY:

It should be possible to run baloo with debugging and follow the what the
code
is doing. At the moment there it little debugging available, an issue
referenced in:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=457522#c24

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Enable debugging by creating a:

~/.config/QtProject/qtlogging.ini

containing:

[rules]
kf.*.debug=true

as per:

https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qloggingcategory.html#logging-rules

https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/Using_Error_Messages

After this run baloo/balooctl from the command line (where possible) and
watch
log messages sent to the terminal.

It should be that messages also get logged (journald?) but I don't seem to
be
able to enable these. Some messages are logged but the bulk appear only
on the terminal.

USE CASES:

I've included some cases below where extra debugging would help sort out
existing issues.

In Bug 368557:

Need enough debugging to track back and find out when and why baloo
stops reacting to inotify messages. This happens, sometimes when an
indexed folder is renamed
(https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=392793#c3)
but also other times where it's not possible to identify the trigger
(Bug 368557)

This would need the stream of debug messages to appear in
syslog/journald.

In Bug 459572:

Make the behaviour as/when baloo meets a symbolic link easier to
follow,
in particular when searching from folders (that might be indexed or
not). It's
not easy to guess what is happening in a case such as Bug 459572, at
the moment
this requires some guesswork.

In Bug 457522:

Following the issues listed in:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=457522#c17

Need something to show why baloo decides on different mimetypes for the
"test.m" file when it does (or doesn't do) content indexing.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Neon Unstable
Plasma: 5.26.80
Frameworks: 5.100.0
Qt: 5.15.6

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In broader terms there should be enough debugging available to follow what
baloo
was doing and make it less of a "Black Box, Behaving Strangely". These are
a few
suggestions:

With:

balooctl index test.txt

it should be possible to follow the process of parsing the command,
determining
the mime type, extracting the terms and that the data is committed through
lmdb.

Then, in a test environment with one file in a single indexed folder, with
a:

balooctl purge

it should be possible to see the database being deleted, follow the folders
being
scanned, inotify watches registered and the files to be index identified -
then the
indexing of the individual file(s) as above.

It should be possible to follow the process when a file is renamed or
deleted -
showing the inotify messages and subsequent updates to the database.

When searching it should be possible to follow the baloosearch logic when,
for
example, parsing the arguments in something like:

baloosearch test AND one OR two

and similarly when searching via krunner:

krunner test

should show how krunner queries baloo, weaves its results together and
categorises them.

It's clear that this has to be a slow, incremental process, deciding on
extra
logging categories (as potentially there might be a lot of trace output)
and
gradually adding conditional debug statements.

19 years and all i ever got was "we don't care about your bug, please confirm
if it's still broken".

Anyhow I don't use konqueror for the web anymore and the button style is so
flat that nothing animates anymore so you can't see the missing animation.

There's no an "I Don't care" button so I'm using "Unmaintained" feel to change
it as you see fit.

This is an issue on windows only apparently. on macOS kerning is properly
preserved at all sizes.

I'll mark this as confirmed, however im not sure how much we can do to resolve
it at the moment since Wolthera is currently rewritting the text tool, and this
issue seems to go deep into the font rendering code.
