[gwenview] [Bug 291102] Gwenview's Folder/Information/Operations tabs belong on top

2017-11-08 Thread Henrik Fehlauer
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=291102

--- Comment #4 from Henrik Fehlauer  ---
I think they are helpful on the bottom (in a "usability heuristics" sense, no a
"I've done an eyetracking study" sense).

Perhaps there's an official/better reason, but at least for Dolphin's case just
going by my gut feeling it would seem pretty weird to have a (visually nearly
unified) tab strip on top, where some of the leftmost tabs would switch
toolviews and the tabs on the right suddenly were for folders. The separation
helps in making sure the user intuitively knows both are different.

For Gwenview, I could see changing the tabs to at least being
draggable/undockable like in Dolphin. Then it would be up to Qt or the widget
style to provide a way to get tabs to the top, and the user could just split
the toolviews so there would be no tabs at all.

Another reason I could think of is that of spreading horizontal bars around a
bit instead of having them all in one place. In general dense groups of buttons
(tabs in our case) are easier to use if they are aligned to something as well
as having a large "landing area". For example, imagine a UI with the menubar
and then several rows of toolbars below (think an older version or MS Word).
Those are hard on the eyes and difficult to navigate, adding tabs below would
make this even worse. By using all 4 edges of of the window this problem is
alleviated. In some rare cases this conflicts with external UI (here: the
taskbar), but those are minor compared to the general case.

Whenever I try to draw anything on the canvas, nothing shows up unless I click

Don't know about Kate's code but, for example, inside keyPressEvent(QKeyEvent
*event) this can be done for a text-edit:

if (event->key() == 0x200c)
{
insertPlainText (QChar (0x200C));
event->accept();
return;
}

It shouldn't be needed after the Qt fix but, apparently, Kate's behavior is
different from that of QPlainTextEdit.

There's some tools you can use.
You could attach to PackageKit with gdb and try to get a backtrace. If you are
not familiar with gdb say so and I'll tell you the required commands.

Something else to test would be to run the update with the "pkmon" tool and see
what's the status and if there's something unexpected going on. You can paste
here the output of pkmon up until PackageKit gets stuck and I'll see how to
proceed.

Thanks!

You can see that the download of Calibre (~30 MiB) appears to hang in Discover
for a long time. With pkcon there is download progress feedback, as you see
later on. (I deleted the package download cache in between these runs.) Please,
don't keep closing this bug without testing. My description was quite clearly
different than the bug this was marked a duplicate of. Maybe this isn't visible
if your internet is so fast that the download isn't noticeable...

PS: maybe the attachment size limit should be raised; I couldn't upload my
recording here.

--- Comment #3 from Christoph Feck  ---
It is a limitation of Qt. The first column is fixed at the first position.

https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-33974 offers some workarounds, such as
actually starting only at the second column (and hiding the first column), but
the real fix should be in Qt.

It's still a problem even with breadcrumb mode enabled. I see this now and
then, but can definitely reproduce with "gwenview ~/Pictures" as well as
"gwenview ~/Pictures/test.jpg" + Esc (make sure to not have the folder toolview
open to see the focus problem).

Could upload a very short clip or provide a link to a video that fails for you?
Also it would be worth checking with VLC (good heuristic to see if the video
itself is fine) as well as Dragon Player (should use the same player component
as Gwenview, i.e. "Phonon") whether those show the same problem.

There are two areas where tabs are used: "Documents" (folders in Dolphin,
terminals in Konsole, pages in Firefox) and toolviews. The latter normally have
their tabs at the bottom (try this in Dolphin by dragging two toolviews on top
of each other). Therefore I don't feel this would need a change or even an
option.

As for the overshooting, I cannot reproduce in fullscreen mode. Only when
maximizing the window this is a potential problem. However, this is true for
almost every control and not really fixable. Maybe it helps turning of the
taskbar thumbnail popups?

2017-11-08 Thread Andrew Brouwers
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=386665

Bug ID: 386665
   Summary: Drop dependency on pulseaudio-gconf?
   Product: plasma-pa
   Version: 5.11.3
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: now...@gmail.com
  Reporter: abrouw...@gmail.com
CC: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

On my distribution, plasma-pa is the only pulse front-end (outside of paprefs)
which requires pulseaudio-gconf. That is, even on gnome, pulseaudio-gconf (and
thus, gconf) are not required for the mixer. It seems really strange that KDE
is brining in gconf, but not gnome (!). plasma-pa is the only KDE component
pulling in gconf.

Is it possible to eliminate this dependency? I'm not sure how gnome-shell (and
other pulseaudio front-ends, for that matter) get around this.

(which you authored, BTW :) contained in 17.08.2? If so, this gives white icons
in fullscreen mode indeed, but only for the hover overlays.

The video button icons and also the trash icon when comparing two images are
still affected in non-fullscreen. Note these have an additional chrome
surrounding the actual buttons. We would have to try whether the same fix could
be applied or if this would stand out too much on Gwenview's darker background
color.

This is a pretty advanced feature, and Gwenview already has rudimentary batch
actions (e.g. rotating multiple pictures at once). As cool as your idea would
be, it's out of scope for a simple image viewer/manager. If your photo
manipulation needs are greater, you might consider using a more powerful and
featureful piece of software such as DigiKam or Darktable.
