Additionally, it gets treated as a folder (it can be opened) and only after opening it is the file opened (a markdown file would be opened in Okular for instance). It seems like inconsistent behavior to me given that all other kinds of usage are consistent: If you make a URL to a folder, it shows a folder icon and behave like one. If you make a URL to a kioslave like man://, it shows a help-contents icon and opens the main man:// folder. If you make a URL to a kioslave like fonts://, it shows a preferences-desktop-font-installer icon, opening the main font folder. If you make a URL to a website, it shows a text-html icon, and it opens on your browser. The tarball contains four files that can be opened with Kate and five with what I assume are japanese characters (they're rendered as squares) plus (elona) or (elonaplus) in their name, those are the ones that do not open on Kate. Dolphin displays a chainlock on the bottom right of their icons. Opening them by clicking makes Kate state the file does not exist. Opening the embedded terminal and opening a file with Kate (like with fish autocompletion) leads to Kate creating a new empty file with the same name. Neither vi or nano seem to render japanese characters correctly (but it might be because I didn't specifically install japanese fonts).
