Further data point. I installed 18.12.from Fedora 30 that I had used
successfully before to try to get some editing done. It froze the machine too.
The reinstall brought mlt-6.22.1-1.fc32.x86_64 with it as a dependency

Just to respond to this reminder.
Will test version 20.08.2 when it becomes available via RPMFusion.
Can report that 20.08.1 operates as expected without Wayland, just X-Org

Have installed 20.08.03 on the system that froze previously. In the meanwhile
that system has been upgraded from Fedora 32 to Fedora 33.(Kernel 5.9.8-200)
Sad to report that the same freeze occurs with Wayland

I use the RPMFusion Spin of kdenlive. It is usable with Xorg.
Perhaps I should log this on the RPMFusion bugzilla
