I managed to hand-edit the .kdenlive XML file to stop it crashing on load.
This diff shows the exact edit; hopefully it helps reveal what's going on.

I can also confirm that scaling the arrow to the project size externally (e.g.
in Gimp) is another valid workaround, on top of the empty track trick mentioned
