2024-02-15 Thread Alexander Wilms
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481371

 Component: general
  Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: f.alexander.wi...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
I can no longer open any font files, neither .otf nor .ttf

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Try to open any font either by double-clicking on it, passing it as an
argument to the command or via File > Open in Font Viewer.

OBSERVED RESULT
The error message "Could not read font."

EXPECTED RESULT
It opens the font file.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Apropos large files, the next file in /proc after /proc/kallsyms (which is 0 B
in size) is /proc/kcore. Dolphin shows its size as 128,0 TiB

Méven Car (https://invent.kde.org/meven) said in the KDE Matrix chat that he'd
like to get sponsored to implement Miller columns in Dolphin once he has enough
time.

To make some progress, it would be good to have an estimate of how much time
the implementation would take and what sum would need to be sponsored.

[Breeze] [Bug 473014] New: Add icon for backup files like .bak, separate from current recycling icon

2023-08-04 Thread Alexander Wilms
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=473014

Bug ID: 473014
   Summary: Add icon for backup files like .bak, separate from
current recycling icon
Classification: Plasma
   Product: Breeze
   Version: 5.27.1
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Icons
  Assignee: visual-des...@kde.org
  Reporter: f.alexander.wi...@gmail.com
CC: kain...@gmail.com, m...@nueljl.in
  Target Milestone: ---

According to https://www.bivouak.fr/dolphin-at-akademy-2023/ , .bak files are
associated with the mime type application/x-trash. While I think naming the
mime type "trash" is not a good fit, I think one way or another, the icon
should reflect that the file is a backup and not use the recycling icon. But
since https://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/media-types.xhtml doesn't
mention an application/x-trash mime type either, maybe it might sense to add an
icon for application/x-backup. A Google search does show a few results for
"application/x-backup".

A noun project search for "backup" shows quite a few results showing a clock
with a counter-clockwise arrow along its circumference.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Dolphin
2. Create example.bak file

OBSERVED RESULT
An icon that suggests the file belongs in the trash

EXPECTED RESULT
An icon that suggests that the file is a potentially important backup

2023-07-19 Thread Alexander Wilms

--- Comment #2 from Alexander Wilms  ---
I encountered the same issue on openSUSE Tumbleweed. Installing libheif1 from
Packman fixed the issue for me:
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1213371

Could Dolphin & Gwenview show a button to install the necessary package for
various distros through PackageKit? Since the format is patent-encumbered, this
might affect quite a few distros.

--- Comment #2 from Alexander Wilms  ---
I prefer symlinks in case a package updates its .desktop file. Dolphin uses the
chain emblem and the italicized text as well, but I think while that is useful
information in a file manager, the emblem is sufficient on the desktop.

Screenshot showing the "Network & internet" section of the Windows system
settings when using DHCP IP assignment

SUMMARY
When doing network administration, I'd like to have easy access to information
about a connection and rarely make changes to all the options the KCM offers. I
think it would be an improvement if the KCM was designed similarly to the way
Windows does it.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Administer network devices and have the need to view the system's IP,
whether it uses an IP automatically assigned via DHCP or a static one, what
subnet mask is in use, the MAC, the DNS server etc.
2. Open System Settings > Connections

OBSERVED RESULT
There are a lot of options that rarely require changes and little information
is shown.

EXPECTED RESULT
Have an overview similar to the Windows system settings, maybe based on the
kinfocenter > Network > Network Interfaces KCM with
* IP assignment type (DHCP/Manual)
* IPv4 address
* IPv4 subnet mask
* IPv6 address
* DNS server
* MAC address
* maybe the name of the network device, e.g. MediaTek Inc. MT7612U
802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wireless Adapter

In order to make the KCM simple by default, the options for changes to network
settings could be hidden behind "Edit" buttons.

A comparison of the text at small-medium icon size

SUMMARY
When one drags a desktop file from Kickoff to the desktop, one can select
whether it should be copied or linked.
Linked desktop files have a chain emblem and italicized text. But even on a
1440px monitor, the italicized text looks less clear than the pixel-aligned
upright text of copied desktop files.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Drag an application from Kickoff to desktop and select "copy"
2. Drag an application from Kickoff to desktop and select "link"

OBSERVED RESULT
The linked .desktop file's text looks less clear

SUMMARY
When I want to get an overview of a lot of PDF files, I open one in Gwenview
and navigate / delete using the keyboard.
However, the thumbnails of PDFs contain no white background.

The background and a drop shadow are shown if the PDF contains a white
background shape, as confirmed by opening the PDF in LibreOffice Draw.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a PDF in Gwenview
2. Enable thumbnails

OBSERVED RESULT
The thumbnail has no white background, instead the gray background of the
widget is visible.

EXPECTED RESULT
I expect the thumbnail to look like in Okular.

PDF which displays rendering artifacts at 150% zoom

SUMMARY
Okular displays rendering artifacts when one opens a PDF and zooms in a bit.
Apparently this is caused by the Splash backend in Poppler's Qt backend.
Enabling the Cairo backend should fix this.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Download the attachment
2. Open specimen.pdf in Evince and Okular

OBSERVED RESULT
Evince renders the text as expected, all characters are on the same baseline.
In Okular, the characters jump up and down.

EXPECTED RESULT
All characters are on the same baseline.

[kfontview] [Bug 467535] New: No popup with information about character when selecting "All characters" view

2023-03-18 Thread Alexander Wilms

Bug ID: 467535
   Summary: No popup with information about character when
selecting "All characters" view
Classification: Applications
   Product: kfontview
   Version: 5.27.2
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: f.alexander.wi...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When I inspect a font like EB Garamond (https://github.com/georgd/EB-Garamond)
with many characters for niche use cases, like historical floral hearts, I'd
like to easily find out a symbol's code point. When I select a preview of the
type "Unicode Block", I get a popup with this information when I hover with the
cursor over the symbol. However, there is no popup when one select the "All
Characters" preview type.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open e.g. /usr/share/fonts/LiberationSans-Regular.ttf in kfontview
2. Select "Unicode Block: Basic Latin" as preview
3. Hover over character
4. Select "All Characters" as preview
5. Hover over character

OBSERVED RESULT
In the first case, one gets a popup with information like this:

Category Letter, Uppercase
UCS-4  U+ 41
UTF-160x 41
UTF-8  0x41
XML Decimal Entity

In the second case, there is no such popup.

EXPECTED RESULT
The same popup, regardless of preview type.

Neochat was working fine but crashed when clicking the close button in the
window decoration.

Something unusual, which might be unrelated: The main window fails to show the
list of rooms and the chat history when I log into KDE. kwallet asks for my
passwort but when I enter it, Neochat keeps showing a loading bar. I can only
start Neochat by running it from the console. I'll add that to the "see also"
section once I've reported that issue as well.

The reporter is unsure if this crash is reproducible.

This part of the original report is wrong:

"The resolution of the original icon that's used as a placeholder differs
depending on the used graphics platform."

The placeholder depends on the screen scale, not the graphics platform.

2023-03-01 Thread Alexander Wilms

Bug ID: 466678
   Summary: Missing icon sizes are replaced with different
higher-res versions at 100% and 200% screen scale
Classification: Frameworks and Libraries
   Product: frameworks-kiconthemes
   Version: 5.103.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: cf...@kde.org
  Reporter: f.alexander.wi...@gmail.com
CC: kdelibs-b...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
The Breeze icon theme does not contain a 16 px version of the
system-switch-user icon. Therefore, a higher-resolution icon is scaled down and
used when a 16 px version of this icon is requested. The resolution of the
original icon that's used as a placeholder differs depending on the used
graphics platform. At 100% scale, the 22 px icon is scaled to 16 px and at 200%
scale, the 32 px icon is scaled to 16 px.

This issue was discovered while investigating
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=466630

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set screen scale to 100% under "System settings > Display and Monitor >
Display Configuration > Scale"
2. Open the icon viewer cuttlefish
3. Search system-switch-user icon
4. Set screen scale to 200%
5. Log out and back in
5. Open the icon viewer cuttlefish
6. Search system-switch-user icon

OBSERVED RESULT
The 16 px versions of the icon differ based on the screen scale used.

EXPECTED RESULT
The icons always look identical at a particular size

[Breeze] [Bug 466630] "Switch user" icon in Kickoff is too detailed/small at high resolutions

2023-03-01 Thread Alexander Wilms
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=466630

--- Comment #5 from Alexander Wilms  ---
I don't think there is a 16px version of the system-switch-user icon. I can't
find it in /usr/share/icons/breeze and not in
https://invent.kde.org/frameworks/breeze-icons/-/tree/master/icons/actions/16
either

Nate and I determined that the difference between our screenshots was due to
the different screen scale. Attached are two cuttlefish screenshots at 100% and
200% scale. It seems like at 200% scale, the 32 px icon is scaled and used as
the 16 px version.

Nate theorized that KIconLoader may be picking the wrong icon size.

Regardless, the icon seems to be pretty hard to read at that size, so I think
an actual 16px version should be added.

Display and Monitor > Display Configuration > Global Scale is set to 100%
Appearance > Fonts > Force font DPI is disabled

I took a look at the system-switch-user icons with Inkscape, and it seems the
menu uses the 22x22 px version rendered at 16x16 px

I think the icons just needs to be available in this additional resolution,
possibly simplified to be recognizable at that size.

Or does it look different on your machine?

SUMMARY
The "Switch user" icon is too detailed/small at high resolutions to be easily
recognizable compared to the other symbolic icons in Kickoff.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use high resolution monitor (e.g. 1440p)
2. Open Kickoff
3. Open the session menu

OBSERVED RESULT
The "switch user" icon is very detailed compared to the "lock screen" and "log
out" icons in the menu or the slightly bigger icons for standby, hibernation
etc.

EXPECTED RESULT
A slightly less detailed icon that is as easily recognizable as the others.

`rm ~/.cache/*plasma*; plasmashell --replace` does fix the issue.

SUMMARY
KIO::JobUiDelegate MessageBoxes like [1] and Kirigami both seem to fill the
same role, but are inconsistent regarding their style.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Dolphin, delete a file, open trash:/, empty trash
2. Open System Setting, navigate to Appearance > Global Theme, select another
global theme, click cancel in prompt
3. Switch to another KCM

OBSERVED RESULT
In cases 1 and 3, the message box is styled like a regular Qt dialog and the
entire parent window is greyed out.
In case 2, a window appears with a swiping animation and has an entirely
different style. Only the KCM is greyed out.

EXPECTED RESULT
All message boxes look like the one Dolphin shows.

SUMMARY
Part of the Continuous Integration steps that are run after each commit of a
merge request at https://invent.kde.org is the code quality check.

However, this check always finds fault with a decrease in code quality even in
files, which a particular merge request didn't even touch. This makes the check
basically worthless, since one cannot easily discern between actual issues
introduced by a commit and old ones.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Fork a repo at https://invent.kde.org
2. Make a small, non-breaking change
3. Submit a merge

OBSERVED RESULT
"Code quality degraded due to 489 new issues"

EXPECTED RESULT
No detected degradation of code quality

[Skanlite] [Bug 462408] Skanlite cashes when trying to cancel scan

2022-11-30 Thread Alexander Wilms
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=462408

--- Comment #6 from Alexander Wilms  ---
I added logging and was able to reproduce the segfault every time by clicking
"Preview" and then "Reselect scanner device" during the scan:

KSaneWidgetPrivate::updateProgress(progress = -1)
m_ksaneCoreInterface: 94251959516592, m_ksaneCoreInterface->scanImage():
94251971563056
KSaneWidgetPrivate::updateProgress(progress = 100)
m_ksaneCoreInterface: 94251959516592, m_ksaneCoreInterface->scanImage(): 0

This is still an issue in openSUSE Tumbleweed 20221127. Is it still accurate
that this is a packaging issue? And if so, wouldn't it make sense to include
the workaround in KDE since several distros seem to have this problem?

--- Comment #3 from Alexander Wilms  ---
I'm trying, but I don't know how to get a relative path from two absolute
paths:
Apparently, the QDir type is not available in QML and in Javascript it's
usually done with a NodeJS module.

function getDesktopURI(fileURI) {
var absoluteDesktopURI =
StandardPaths.writableLocation(StandardPaths.DesktopLocation)
//  var relativeURI = absoluteDesktopURI.relativeFilePath(fileURI) <- QDir
method
//  var desktopURI = relativeURI.replace("file://","desktop://")
console.log(fileURI)
console.log(absoluteDesktopURI)
//  console.log(relativeURI)

//var path = require('path') <- NodeJS module
//console.log(path.relative('/foo/bar/baz', '/foo'))
return fileURI
}
