[kwin] [Bug 427972] Display of (Qt)Virtual Keyboard doesn't work properly under Wayland session.

2020-10-22 Thread Andrey Kozlovskiy
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=427972

I just wanted to say that the virtual keyboard is a mandatory feature for any
DE and should be available and work everywhere, whether it is the login screen,
lock screen, gtk or qt or another application or the DE itself. I am surprised
that KDE on X11 doesn't have a built-in virtual keyboard and on Wayland it's
completely broken too.

Virtual keyboard on the login screen and Onboard already installed on X11 once
saved me from buying an external keyboard when I spilled water on my laptop (I
was able to type everything with touchpad for some time).

[plasmashell] [Bug 428108] Bluetooth management from login and lock screens

2020-10-22 Thread Andrey Kozlovskiy
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=428108

If you think about it, it may be useful to connect some devices automatically
(or be able to connect them manually) from login screen such as bluetooth
keyboard or mouse, for example if your main keyboard or touchpad are broken.
Maybe other accessibility devices too.

[plasmashell] [Bug 428108] New: Bluetooth management from login and lock screens

2020-10-22 Thread Andrey Kozlovskiy
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=428108

Bug ID: 428108
Summary: Bluetooth management from login and lock screens
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 5.18.5
  Platform: Kubuntu Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: k...@davidedmundson.co.uk
  Reporter: andronon...@gmail.com
CC: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: 1.0

I have a bluetooth headset that was already paired from my PC user account.
When I power on the headset, it automatically connects to my PC if PC was the
last device it was connected to. Headset has a sound indication of
connection/disconnection.

The problem is that if I turn on the headset right after PC boot, headset
automatically connects to PC even before login to user account from SDDM.
What's even worse is that you can't disconnect the headset from login screen to
connect it to another device (imagine if you're not the user and you don't know
the password but want to use headset paired to this PC). Connection status is
not displayed either, so it may be not obvious to which device headset is
connected right now. After login, however, headset automatically disconnects
for some reason and not reconnects again.

Same applies to lock screen too - you can't see connection status and
disconnect the headset if you're not the user and don't know the password.

All said, there are 3 problems with bluetooth management from login and lock
screens:
1. Bluetooth device can be autoconnected from login screen before login to user
account and from lock screen
2. Bluetooth device connection status is not displayed on login and lock
screens
3. Bluetooth device can't be disconnected from login and lock screens

Besides, I don't know how Bluetooth manages keys, but isn't the autoconnection
before login a vulnerability?

Kubuntu 20.04.1 LTS with Plasma 5.18.5.

I can confirm this problem. Tested on latest KDE Neon (Wayland) with Plasma
5.20.1.

- The keyboard does not work at all if you activate it from the respective tray
icon. "On-Screen keyboard Activated" popup is shown though.

- If you run it manually with "QT_IM_MODULE=qtvirtualkeyboard" variable, in
many applications it just disappears immediately after clicking on some text
field.

- If you run "systemsettings5" with this variable, the window and keyboard
flashes constantly and this error is repeatedly displayed in the console:
> file:///usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/qml/org/kde/kirigami.2/ApplicationItem.qml:0:

Back button behavior when only desktop is displayed

When only desktop is displayed, back button in 'Status and notifications'
closes the panel. I think it's a bit unintuitive that back button doesn't
return to the main grid and you should open it again. When some window is
displayed, this does not happen (panel automatically reopens).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Ensure that all windows are closed or hidden.
2. Open 'Status and Notifications' panel (show hidden icons)
3. Enter some category from grid view, for example 'Notifications'
4. Try to go back to main panel, but back button closes it instead.

Essentially it was the reason indeed. I haven't copied the dbus stuff in my

What was fixed is 3 bugs in MR
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/210. You can see there how
to reproduce them, if you had earlier version to compare with. Overall, it
brought much prettier OSD experience for me than earlier.
I didn't touch the OSD size, just hoped improvements above would make OSD good
enough to keep it..

Anyway, the biggest question to me now is that without this issue fix we have
somewhat inconsistent behavior:
- when you switch apps with Alt+Tab, you got OSD
- when you switch by mouse - you don't.
Ideally we should have the behavior consistent - just wonder if anybody finds
current behavior better..
We can keep it for a while, take the experience, and then decide if we really
need this fixed (we have MR anyway).
So please report any time later what do you think (or if you are confident -
you can say it now also).

It's not the applet corresponding to X11's one :)

The fix just make it show layout correctly when you hover that "applet", but it
doesn't show the layout permanently as X11 does.
The new applet is in developing now, but until it ready we really don't have
other way to know current layout than OSD..

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=426900

Bug ID: 426900
Summary: [Wayland] Keyboard Layout applet doesn't follow actual
layout switching
   Product: kwin
   Version: git master
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: input
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: butir...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
The applet only changes it's layout indication when it's clicked or on input
event with the new layout (provoking OSD with the layout).
But layout could also be changed due just switching between different
windows/apps (when on App/Win layout Policy), or when it's loaded from previous
session on start.
In the latter case, the indication doesn't changes and therefor is wrong.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set Layout policy to Application (in keyboard settings)
2. Change layout for some app, note it from the applet in systray.
3. Switch active window to some other app.

OBSERVED RESULT
Layout indication doesn't change.

EXPECTED RESULT
The indication should follow currently active layout.

Operating System: Ubuntu 20.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.19.80
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.74.0
Qt Version: 5.14.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
It was fixed earlier for kwin's in-built C++ plasmoid in Bug 425343.
Now we need the same for QML one, which is positioned as a replacement.

On X11 you shouldn't have such problem because it has no layout OSD when
switching shortcut configured as "Primary"(IIRC) in Settings.

What applet are you using? AFAIK it's not ready yet for Wayland.

There is two cases when OSD is shown:
- user actually changed layout (by a shortcut or so)
- start typing in window with new layout (when not on Global layout Policy)

What kind of OSD it's proposed to suppress here?

For some reason I need to double press the start/stop button on my bluetooth
headset to pause or resume media playback, for example if I am using Elisa or
if I am playing some video in Firefox with plasma-integration plugin enabled.
My bluetooth headset is Sony WI-C400, I use Kubuntu 20.04.1 LTS.
Can anybody confirm this problem? Maybe it depends on the headset, or maybe
this should be fixed upstream?

Cool that you tried Neon Dev!
Actually, layout changes immediately in both cases. It's just OSD which is
delayed when you switch windows with mouse. I suppose it's by design.

When you switch by Alt+Tab, OSD is actually triggered by key input, that is why
you get it immediately. I don't know yet the right way how to suppress it.

Still, Neon doesn't have my OSD fixes since MR
https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/210 is not yet merged.
They will bring much improvements IMO so stay tuned :)

Hi Elman, thanks for testing. Actually, the behavior you described earlier is
still there - just switch with Alt+Tab without typing between apps with
different layout and you'll get the OSD.
Still, I'm not sure if the both OSDs are bugs or features.
There are bunch of fixes pending on that matter, so it looks OK for me here
even with that OSDs.
I'll ask you to retest (e.g on KDE Neon Dev) when that fixes land so you could
decide for yourself.

> When I use Thunderbird, sometimes I write in English and
> sometimes in different language. So I do not remember which layout I used

It's not quite the case any more - see bug 425343. You can know the current
layout at any time just by hovering the Keyboard Layout applet.

> Not to mention
> that OSD might appear over the text I'm typing and it is distracting.
Didn't notice that problem, but I don't use Plasma as my daily driver (yet?).

> The other bug I mentioned is that system tray layout indicator doesn't show

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=426122

Bug ID: 426122
Summary: redundant OSD indication when switching keyboard
layout with Policy other than Global
   Product: kwin
   Version: git master
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: input
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: butir...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
Described the case with Application switching Policy.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set Application Policy for keyboard layout switching in Keyboard Settings.
Make sure there are at least 2 layouts.
2. Switch layout in one app, note OSD notification pop up on the switching.
3. Focus another app with mouse.

pressing Alt+Tab, hold down Alt for a while, then Tab.

OBSERVED RESULT
On Alt, OSD notification popup immediately even before the app switch.

I fully agree with this. The same applies to the download indicator bar - it
should only be displayed for the window where the download started.

Of course, if it is technically possible.

Sorry, reading the description it's not instantly clear if it's XWayland
problem or native Wayland clients are suffer also.
If it's known already, could we please point it out in the Bug header? Probably
"XWayland" flag would be useful also..

Could you try to find out if it's Wine-related, StarCraft related or something
else?
Easier way to reproduce it is preferable (with free software).
