[ktnef] [Bug 473691] New: KTnef 23.04.1 can not open winmail.dat, but Thunderbird is able to convert into text/plain
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=473691 Bug ID: 473691 Summary: KTnef 23.04.1 can not open winmail.dat, but Thunderbird is able to convert into text/plain Classification: Applications Product: ktnef Version: unspecified Platform: Mageia RPMs OS: Linux Status: REPORTED Severity: normal Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: kdepim-b...@kde.org Reporter: estel...@elstel.org Target Milestone: --- used: ktnef-23.04.1-2.mga9, arch i686, Mageia 9 used: thunderbird-102.12.0-1.mga9, arch i686 used: tnef 1.4.18, commit 1810f3a 45459a2, arch i686, self-compiled kernel: 6.3.9-desktop-1.mga9 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Jun 21 16:54:49 UTC 2023 i686 ktnef displays a GUI alert/message box that says "Opening file winmail.dat not possible" (original text: "Das Öffnen der Datei „winmail.dat“ ist nicht möglich."). KTnef will run and hold its main window open, but no file or content appear to be displayed, although it says "winmail.dat - KTnef" in the title bar. It is possible to make a "save message text to file" which results in an empty file, zero bytes long. Viewing as ritch text says "no rtf in this document" and opening ktnef without any command line parameter afterwards (i.e. without winmail.dat) the file that was opened last (or not) isn´t viewed under actual documents (which appears to be a list similar to last opened in libreoffice-writer). If you inspect winmail.dat with 'od' or 'vim -MR/:set wrap on', you don´t see more than a few SMTP-headers. If you attach the winmail.dat within a Thunderbird Email directly, it will be decoded into text/plain. Saving this text/plain as .eml and opening it with Thunderbird again, you get an empty Email with same or similar headers as the envelope had. The winmail.dat itself was an attachement inside an attached .eml (as you will often encounter; however in Σ a 3-time nest/wrap excluding the top-Email) and thus Thunderbird´s only offer about it was saving to disk (or on my other machine opening it with ktnef, which didn´t do the trick either). Here you can find the attachements: https://upload.elstel.info/corr/DKB-edr/ (ask-me42copy2this-report) Here is what the tnef command line program does (see at https://github.com/verdammelt/tnef/issues/47): > tnef --ignore-cruft -v [--list] -f winmail.dat WARNING: garbage at end of file (ignored) > no content extracted, no files listed -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

I also find that if I do not click in exactly the right place, Okular creates a new text box, and hen I cannot delete it. I had to do a search to figure this out. Surely a simple solution with too much difficulty would simply be to add a "delete" function in the right-click context menu? I mean, all the code already exists, doesn't it? https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=431262 --- Comment #2 from elmar --- The database is on a M2-SSD, not USB:-) The problem is that the photo-HDD (via 6GBit SATA) is so high and takes considerably longer than digikam writes metadata (at least considering the progress bars). Select 1000 photos in the thumbnails view 2. Check a tag in the Captions/Tags view 3. Apply OBSERVED RESULT The tag is added to the photos, the process takes about 5-10 seconds for 1000 photos. After that there's still a lot of HDD activity, scrolling through the thumbnails is very slow. Task manager shows a CPU load of 16% (on a 4c/8t CPU) and around 80MB/s read activity for digikam. Write activity on mysql is around 1.5MB/s. To the user this seems like digikam is regenerating the thumbnails for those photos (not just adding a tag to them). Download latest iso 6. repeat process OBSERVED RESULT The first time, I had to do a GRUB fix because I could not start up Linux Mint Cinnamon. EXPECTED RESULT Should work flalessly SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Windows: macOS: Linux/KDE Plasma: (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: KDE Frameworks Version: Qt Version: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I have a 2TB HDD it is partitioned as follows sda1= 1GB; sda2=334GB; sda4=734GB; sda3=931GB (sd4=855GB, sda6=75GB) The dividing up could have been better, and was done before I understood that there was a limit on physical partitions (4, I think) sda3 was intended to be for seldom used online storage to protect the HDD. That purpose was kind of defeated when I created sda6 for Mint. sda4is used for my working data. The default option for Neon want so install into sda6, which makes no sense, since it is only 75GB. My first attempt was to leave what is sda2 as unusable. (I can understand if Neon ignores that because it might be that I do not want to use it for whatever reason. At one point it had held Manjaro. Then I created the partition and attempted again. This time again it chose sda6, ignoring the big sda2. So used the Other option and it hung as mentioned above. That was when I downloaded the iso again. I was struck by the fact that version number reported was the same (after about a year). (it is disappointing that you do not say what the version no is in the ISO filename.) (Why do I try KDE and Manjaro? because without any rational reason, it seems that QT is a better framework than whatever Ubuntu uses; but I far prefer the deb packaging method. Whilst I was a techie 30y ago, these days I simply don't have the time or inclination to be getting into the guts of the system anymore. I have to focus on projects and running small whatever business I am in. I do also prefer KOrganizer over Thunderbird, but rather stick as muc as possible with the LMC vanilla. Also prefer Dolphin over Nemo.) I thought that if I formatted sda2, that Neon would not try to restore "previously installed packages" - how would it know that? I even tried installing without being connected to the internet. No dice. Another thing I noticed: Neon's wifi connection strength reports much lower % than Mint. Not sure why that would be. I have a Nokia router connected to fibre. Not sure what more I can tell you. This seems a duplicate of https://www.reddit.com/r/kdeneon/comments/gdkvrv/installer_crash/ I cannot spend anymore time on this now. So I will have to forget about Neon, but I wish you luck. [dolphin] [Bug 385428] Titlebar button does not show
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=385428 --- Comment #2 from Elmar <rob...@iafrica.com> --- The problem was I used system settings to put the menus into the titlebar, but some apps (like Kontact) don't do it. So I switched the settings back, but the menus did not display again. It may of course be that a reboot is required? If so, it would be good if there was a note to say so. I managed to get the menus back - think I picked this up in a google search. Is all good now. Told me to find the config files and change the ShowMenu to Enabled. It would be useful if there were a guide or doc that described where the config files are and what their format is. I switched to Linux in 2009 (after MS from DOS1.0 and Win1.0 Ha!). First Ubuntu, then Linux Mint Cinnamon in 2013, and then tried KDE at various times, but was always problematic. Still use MS in VM. tested out NEON and decided to switch - I like the ability to configure things the way I like it and am also a demanding user. In Thunderbird, there is an addon to save an email to a PDF file. Is there any way one can do that in KMail? Also, in the KMail templates, is it possible to use rich text (bold, colours) in the identity templates? Or do I need to talk to someone else about this?
